PREVIEW: LAS PALMAS – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

20 Jan 2017
Again Depor face a game with important casualties and again the rival is having the same problems. Garitano is ready to switch the draw into a 4-4-2 visiting one of the two teams that remains undefeated at home.

Referee: David Fernández Borbalán
Kick-off: 20h45 CET (Estadio de Gran Canaria)

STATISTICS: UNDEFEATED AT HOME
UD Las Palmas and Real Madrid are the only teams at Primera División that haven’t lost at home yet. The Canarians have played nine games at the Estadio de Gran Canaria clinching five victories and four draws. Among their home meetings is a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid (matchday 06) and a trilling 3-3 draw with RC Celta after been trailing 0-3 by half-time (matchday 10)

Meanwhile, Deportivo is one of the four teams that haven’t won yet on the road. The other three are Málaga CF, Granada CF and Sporting Gijón. The Galicians have only clinched four draws after nine visits. Interestingly, Deportivo haven’t lost in the last four visits to UD Las Palmas, including the last three since they moved to Estadio de Gran Canaria; actually they have not even conceded a goal: three victories there for the seasons 2011/12 (0-1), 2013/14 (0-1) and 2015/16 (0-2)

Another interesting stat is that, despite the casualties hitting the squad, Deportivo haven’t lost since the last-second defeat at Real Madrid (October 12). Since then the Galicians have played six official games (three in liga and three in Copa) and clinched two wins and four draws.

DEPORTIVO: TWO STRIKERS
Coach Gaizka Garitano is ready to return to the scheme with two strikers, it’s the draw that the Basque man tested in the last two training sessions before the game. Juanfran returns from suspension and goes directly into the starting eleven performing at the right side in defence.

Joselu is the second novelty as he will join Florin Andone in attack. Luisinho stays on the left wing and Çolak is moved to the right. Alejandro Arribas is expected to keep his spot alongside Sidnei at the centre of the defence.

Team news: New signings Ola John and Gaël Kakuta aren’t ready to debut, Garitano revealed that the latter should be available for the next game. The coach also revealed that he decided to pick nineteen men as some players -he didn’t specify who- are dragging issues.

For this reason, he picked two lads from Depor B: Winger Óscar García ‘Pinchi’ and Portuguese striker Esmiraldo Sá da Silva ‘Jardel’. It’s the first pick for the 19-year-old player. Carles Gil and Bruno Gama are the two players staying at the injury room. The only man out for tactical reasons is goalkeeper Rubén Martínez, while Fayçal Fajr remains concentrated with Morocco.

Man to watch: Playmaker Emre Çolak. Deportivo suffer when the Turkish isn’t plugged into the games and last week Garitano said that he’s aware that the playmaker doesn’t feel comfortable attached to the sides, but that’s exactly what the Basque coach is planning as Çolak is set to play on the right wing. If Depor want to make an impact in the game it should be with the best version of the ex-Galatasaray man.

Picked players: (19) Tytoń, Lux (goalkeepers); Juanfran, Laure, Arribas, Albentosa, Sidnei, Navarro, Luisinho (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Borges, Pedro Mosquera, Çolak, Guilherme (midfielders); Joselu, Marlos Moreno, Óscar García, Florin Andone & Jardel (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Tytoń – Juanfran, Arribas, Sidnei, Navarro – Çolak, Borges, Guilherme, Luisinho – Joselu, Andone.

UD LAS PALMAS: POSSESSION
If something characterizes the identity of UD Las Palmas is the philosophy of coach Quique Setién, based in the control of the ball in order to obtain positive results, thus the Canarians are the third team with more ball possession in la liga (56.8%), only behind FC Barcelona (62.4%) and Sevilla CF (57.4%).

They are also the third team with the best passing ratio in the league (84.3%), only behind FC Barcelona (87%) and Real Madrid (86.9%). It’s one of the main explanations why they have clinched good results at home all season long, because they always had the ball during the home matches of this campaign, including the visit of Real Madrid (55%).

Team news: Earthquake at UD Las Palmas, coach Quique Setién revealed on Thursday disciplinary problems in recent weeks and announced that some regular starters are going to be pulled off the roster [it will be released until Friday]. The media believes that two of the punished men are Jonathan Viera and Sergio Araujo. For now the coach only announced that three lads from the B squad are going to be picked: centre-back Eric Curbelo, left winger Benito and top-scorer at Las Palmas B Erik Expósito.

To make things worse centre-backs David García (hamstring) and Pedro Bigas (knee), plus centre midfielder Javi Castellano (knee) are out injured, while top-scorer Kevin-Prince Boateng is suspended.

Man to watch: Striker Marko Livaja.  The Croatian was signed for free during the summer window and it was a right call, after 15 presentations in la liga the 23-year-old attacker has netted 4 goals and provided 3 assists. He also scored a brace in the Copa returning leg against Atlético Madrid (3-2 win). He’s the man to watch as top-scorer Boateng is out suspended.

Picked players: Roster to be released until Friday.

Predicted lineup: (4-3-3) Varas – Macedo, Lemos, Aythami, Hélder – Momo, Mesa, Vicente Gómez – Zhar, Livaja, Tana.
