Deportivo rescued a point in one of its worst games on the season; the Galicians were erratic with the passes and only completed a shot on target, fortunately it was the equalizer from Andone.

Coach Gaizka Garitano presented the expected lineup, a 4-4-2 formation with Przemysław Tytoń covering the goal, Juanfran Moreno returned to the right side in defence, Fernando Navarro performed on the left, while the central positions were for Sidnei Rechel and Alejandro Arribas.

Guilherme and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Emre Çolak attacked from the right wing, Luisinho did it from the left, then Joselu and Florin Andone were the centre forwards.

At UD Las Palmas, coach Quique Setíen presented a 4-3-3 draw with several novelties after some players were punished for disciplinary reasons. Ex-Depor centre-back Aythami Artiles and winger Momo were starters. Croatian Marko Livaja was the main reference in attack.

Discrete first half for Deportivo; the Galicians were poor in defence and inexistent in attack for thirty minutes, enough time for the Canarians to score a goal. Later the visiting side improved, but it was unable to complete a shot on target.

Las Palmas started strongly and had two chances to score within the first ten minutes, the first was a strong shot by Livaja saved by Tytoń (6’). In the resulting corner-kick Aythami headed the ball out.

Depor started to have more ball possession starting at minute 10, but it was unable to reach the opposite area. Then a couple of rebounds were going to mean the first goal for the Canarians. A cross from Hélder Lopes was deflected by Sidnei and Mateo García seized the situation to score from close range and after a new rebound in the Brazilian.

There wasn’t any reaction from the visiting team, the Galicians were having big problems to step into the rival’s area and the continuous errors passing the ball were costing counterattacks, therefore the players never felt comfortable.

Depor’s first approximation in the game came until minute 29, after a cross from the left, and a rebound, the ball reached the path of Celso Borges and the midfielder sent the ball wide. Until this point Deportivo were lost on the pitch, having problems at the back and unable to create anything in offense, and that picture slightly changed for the last frame in the half.

The first sense of danger at Las Palmas’ area was a drilling cross from Juanfran that was cleared the defence (32’). Four minutes later Guilherme sent the ball out after collecting a rebound at the edge of the area in a corner-kick action.

Within the last ten minutes Deportivo seemed more settled on the pitch, but their only chance to score was a header of Borges after a corner-kick by Guilherme (42’). The Galicians had clearly improved within the last fifteen minutes on this half, but still they were unable to complete a shot on target.

Deportivo didn't improve in the second half, but in one of the two chances that the Galicians had in attackAndone was able to materialize the equalizer. Neither Las Palmas played well, to the point that Andone could have scored the winner at the end.

The final part begun as the first started: Depor committing a lot of errors with the passes and having problems to contain the attacks by the Canarians. Las Palmas had their first opportunity at minute 58, a drilling cross from Hélder Lopez was found by Vicente Gómez at the edge of the area and his shot missed the target.

Garitano switched the draw, now Depor were playing a 4-1-4-1 with Joselu attached to the right wing and Çolak playing behind Andone. The Galicians were still missing to create a clear scoring opportunity and suddenly, from nowhere, they found the equalizer.

Emre Çolak made a marvelous  pass from midfield to Florin Andone, the Romanian entered the area by the left right side of the area and scored with a strong shot into the top right-corner of local goalie Javi Varas. That was the first shot on target for the Galicians in the entire match.

Suddenly Depor realized that it was able to win the game, especially after Aythami< was sent off in a matter of five minutes after seeing two yellow cards. Garitano was going to put Laure in order to protect the result, but instead replaced Luisinho with Marlos Moreno.

And the big chance to win the game came at minute 85, Juanfran released a cross that Andone couldn’t connect the ball properly and it went out. Then Óscar García debuted in liga replacing Joselu during the stoppage time, the last shot in the game was also for Depor with Marlos Moreno having a blocked shot at the last second (90+4’).

One of the worst games of Deportivo in the first round, the Galicians never felt comfortable after missing key passes that were causing counterattack, but still they managed to rescue a point with the seventh goal on the season for Andone. The Romanian was close to score the second at the end in what was a poor game for Las Palmas too.

Deportivo end the first round with 19 points in 19 games, the Galicians have clinched five draws in the five official games disputed in 2017 (three in liga and two in Copa). Los Blanquiazules launch the second round visiting SD Eibar on next Saturday (18h30 CET).
