Real Madrid are the winter champions, Sevilla CF remain in the fight for the title, while the last three places made the worst first round in this century.

The first round at Primera División ended this weekend with all the fronts still open. Real Madrid returned to winning ways though without convincing in a 2-1 home win over Málaga CF. Still, Los Blancos are the winter champions having a one-point lead and one pending game against Valencia CF.

Sevilla CF are the first surprise is la liga because they end the first round as the runners-up, in this matchday they came back in the score twice in a trilling 3-4 win at CA Osasuna. The Andalusians added 42 points in the first round, their best mark ever. FC Barcelona remain third after an easy 0-4 win visiting SD Eibar.

Atlético Madrid needed a late goal by Griezmann to rescue a point at Athletic Club (2-2). The Madrilenians keep the fourth place only by the goal difference rule as they are tied in points with Real Sociedad, side that also needed a late goal in order to beat RC Celta (1-0).

There’s an interesting fight for the sixth position, Villarreal CF have only picked a point within the last three games and only have a two-point advantage over the 7th place. In this matchday the yellow submarine lost the derby at home before Valencia CF (0-2).

Meanwhile, the last three places continued with their sorrow. Granada CF lost again, this time visiting RCD Espanyol (3-1). The Andalusians and CA Osasuna only won once in the first round, while Sporting Gijón could only get a point in their visit to Real Betis (0-0).

So, for the first time in this century the three clubs in relegation end the first round with 13 or lesser points. Thus, other clubs like CD Leganés and Deportivo see that, despite their poor record, they still have an important difference with the last three places.

CD Leganés came back in the score twice visiting Deportivo Alavés and gabbed a point (2-2). Palo Insua scored the final equalizer. The Madrilenians have a five-point lead over demotion. Deportivo rescued a point at UD Las Palmas (1-1) and are six points above the drop zone.

The second round start with a big game as Real Sociedad visit leaders Real Madrid. The Basques are the fourth most in-form team in the league with four win within the last six games. FC Barcelona visit Real Betis, while Deportivo visit SD Eibar.
