Davy Roef arrives to Depor in a loan deal that includes the swap for Rubén Martínez. The keeper is the first Belgian signed by the Galicians.

Deportivo have a new goalkeeper: Davy Roef, who is the first Belgian to play at Deportivo. The deal with his club, RSC Anderlecht, is a loan deal lasting until the end of the season and was made after Rubén Martínez asked for an exit. In the end both clubs agreed a swap or a double loan deal lasting until June.

The Belgian completed the medicals on Tuesday and talked to reporters (he speaks English), and explained what he knows of Deportivo, “I know Deportivo for its great history. This is a great chance to play in the Spanish League, for me it’s the best league in the world. I remember the series in Champions before Milan and knew great players like Roy Makaay and Diego Tristán.”

He also explained why he left Anderlecht, “This was my first season as the first keeper of the team, I think I probably played thirty games and then the coach decided to switch the keeper. I am happy for been here. I will work hard and try to have a chance at Deportivo.”

Davy Roef is a 22-year-old keeper (he will be 23 in February) that was starting to have a protagonic role in his professional career during this season. He is a youth product of KFCO Wilrijk, then he went to Germinal Beerschot. after he started playing for RSC Anderlecht. Before the start of the season 2012/13, Roef was called to the first team.

He made his debut for the Purple & White club on January 19, 2014 when he had to replace injured Silvio Proto in the first half of the league game against KV Mechelen. Later on that same season the keeper made his Champions League debut against Galatasaray.

Between 2012 and 2016, Roef only appeared nine times with Anderlecht, but that changed for the present campaign, because in July of 2016 Proton left the club for KV Oostende and he earned the starting position at the goal.

During the present campaign Roef has made 23 official appearances with the team (15 for the Belgian First Division A, 2 in the Champions League and 8 in the Europa League). His problem was to commit a huge error that cost two points in the visit to Saint-Etienne for the Europa League (September 29). The game was 0-1 and the error meant the 1-1.

Roef kept playing after that, but always with the suspicious eyes of the fans and coach René Weiler, the keeper felt the pressure and requested a transfer. That’s why RSC Anderlecht was searching for a starting keeper and they put their eyes on Rubén Martinez and a chance for a swap was possible. The keeper is the third signing during the winter window after the arrivals of Ola Johan and Gaël Kakuta.
