REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 – ALAVÉS 1 (LIGA)

19 Feb 2017
New defeat for Deportivo, Alavés only needed a penalty to defeat a mentally broken side that had the ball, but that later had big problems to create scoring opportunities.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Gaizka Garitano surprised as he made several changes at the lineup, more precisely three modifications. Germán Lux was a starter at the goal, this was the first game for the Argentine in 2017 (his previous appearance was in October 23 in the derby with RC Celta). The other two novelties were Luisinho and Bruno Gama.

It was a 4-2-3-1 figure, Lux was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, Raúl Albentosa and Sidnei were the centre-backs, Guilherme and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Gaël Kakuta did it from the left and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Alavés, Mauricio Pellegrino. presented the expected 4-2-3-1 formation. Marcos Llorente was the reference at midfield, while the quest for the goals was a job for Deyverson Silva, Ibai Gómez and Víctor Camarasa.

This was the first game at the Riazor after the problems had before the meeting with Real Betis. The roof at the stadium wasn’t totally repaired, there some holes in the structure yet to be covered, so the club offered the public under these sections the option to be moved to other parts of the stadium.

FIRST HALF
Promising start for a Deportivo that seemed focused, but that later faded away due to the defensive wall of Alavés. Kakuta and Juanfran had the best chances for the Galicians, while Deyverson failed in the best chance for the visiting team.

It was a good start for Deportivo, having the ball and making interesting combinations in attack, while Alavés were locked at the back waiting for a counterattack. The first opportunity for the Galicians came at minute 6, Luisinho released a cross from the left and Kakuta headed the ball out. Two minutes later, after a corner-kick action, Çolak released a cross from the right, Albentosa headed the ball first at the far post and later Sidnei headed the ball and it went over the crossbar.

The first chance for Alavés came at minute 13, it was corner-kick action in which centre-back Laguardia headed the ball downwards, it hit the ground and Lux ended clearing the ball over the bar.

Alavés were balancing the game with their high pressure, but the chances continued to be for Deportivo.  At minute 17, Kakuta was assisted by Bruno Gama and his shot from the edge of the area hit the corner of the crossbar, the loose ball was headed by Juanfran, but visiting goalie Pacheco was there to make the save.

Alavés had a great chance in a perfect counterattack, Ibai Gómez made a long pass that left Deyverson alone before Lux, and incredibly the Brazilian sent the ball wide from inside the box (22’). Depor responded with a cross from Juanfran that Kakuta touched with the ball passing close to the near post of Pacheco.

Within the final fifteen minutes, Depor continued pushing, though lacking depth and ideas. The Galicians only approached the area in the six corners thrown in this frame of the meeting, while Alavés seemed content with the result.

SECOND HALF
Terrible final part for Deportivo, if the Galicians were hurried when the score was 0-0, then they were lost after leaking the goal. Alavés weren’t better, but only needed a penalty to add three points before a team that was mentally broken.

The final part started with a low pace, Depor were having big problems to attack, while Alavés were more than content with the situation. So, things were more boring compared to the first half. The first opportunity for the locals was a low shot from the edge of the area by Andone that was blocked by Pacheco (53’).

Garitano didn’t like how Kakuta lost a ball at midfield and replaced him with Carles Gil. The change didn’t improve the things as the Galicians were still having big problems to attack. Depor were too hurried to end the plays, so the ball possession was useless to create a sense of danger.

To make things worse the visiting side earned a penalty at the middle of the half. It was a cross from the right in which he Albentosa pushed Deyverson inside the box. Manu García capitalized the opportunity firing from the spot. It was the only thing that Alavés needed to grab the three points.

Garitano ordered the second substitution and Joselu replaced Borges. But it only created more problems, because Çolak delayed his position in order to join Guilherme and now the Galicians were not even approaching into the rival’s area.

If the locals were hurried when the score was 0-0, now they were desperate. They didn’t create any harm and even Alavés were closer to net the second goal than Depor of scoring the equalizer. The next chance for Depor came until minute 82, it was a low and drilling shot from Guilherme that was blocked by Pacheco.

Sobrino was close to score the second goal for Alavés in a counterattack, but Lux deflected his header and then the ball hit the crossbar (85’). Garitano realized that the previous change was a mistake and now introduced Fajr replacing Bruno Gama, now Çolak returned to his natural position.

But it was too late. The last chance for Deportivo came in a lateral free-kick from Fajr, Luisinho got the ball at the far post and his strong and low shot was luckily deflected by Feddal at the goal line (89’). The game ended with a heavy protest from the fans.

AFTER THE GAME
Disappointing game for Deportivo, the Galicians only had a few opportunities, but it was more than what Alavés did. The Galicians were mentally broken team that didn’t know how to play and neither how to react before a solid defensive wall.

Depor will remain three points above the relegation zone, and it’s one of the four teams that remain winless in 2017 (the other three are Málaga, Osasuna and Leganés). The next game is the visit to CD Leganés (Saturday, 18h30 CET).
