As it could be expected there weren’t too many differences in the first game with Pepe Mel, though he was more dynamic with the tactical changes throughout the match. The less habitual players with Garitano shone in this game.

The five notes from the game against Atlético Madrid:

1- Little changes: Deportivo showed a more solid face compared to the previous disasters against Alavés and Leganés, perhaps a consequence of the arrival of a new coach, but in the end little changes were detected comparing the stage with Gaizka Garitano.

The team continued to show a lack of depth in certain moments in the game and later, when it created scoring opportunities, it lacked definition. And, to continue with the tradition, the team ended dropping points after taking the lead in the scoresheet.

2- Repositioning: Perhaps the biggest difference noticed in the first game with Pepe Mel was the quick adaptation to the circumstances. Kakuta and Luisinho had big problems at the start facing
Sime Vrsaljko, and by minute 20 Mel had already switched the positons between Kakuta and Fajr, this in order to cover the crack.

These quick reactions weren’t normal before with Garitano on board, the normal thing was to see the Basque coach reacting until the second part. There were more repositioning moves throughout the encounter, like advancing the position of Luisinho and introducing Navarro when Simeone decided to pull Griezmann into the left wing, or when Borges was playing behind Andone after Álex Bergantiños was introduced into the game.

3- Mosquera, Fajr, Laure and Bergantiños: If this game was useful for something it was to realize that the less habitual players with Garitano can also add things. Mel was very happy with them and mentioned that it’s important to have everyone available. Mosquera and Fajr were starters and made a vert complete game, they were the players with more touches (66 and 65 respectively) and Mosquera was even close to score the second goal with an accurate volley saved by Oblak at the end of the first half. Laure and Álex entered at the end and probed that both can help the team in moments of need.

4- Andone, yes and no: The Romanian striker netted his first goal in 2017 and his eighth on the season, this after seizing a big error and through a clinical finish. He is a fighter and one of the most respected players by the fans due to his sacrifice. However, he also missed a clear opportunity to score that should have been the 2-1, this after missing the ball at the goal line after a cross by Fajr

5- Another bad game for Kakuta: A lot was expected from Gaël Kakuta when he landed in A Coruña, but after five presentations the Frenchman hasn’t shown too much. In this game he missed too many passes (only 60% in his pass ratio) and was switched to the right wing after been unable to help Luisinho with Vrsaljko. He missed a clear chance to score the second goal just minutes after Andone’s goal and ended replaced at minute 53.
