Deportivo and Sporting Gijón represent two of the worst streaks in 2017. The Galicians have only added four points in the year and remain winless on the road; they are one of the three teams in the competition that haven’t achieved an away victory in the competition (the other two are Málaga CF and Granada CF).

Meanwhile, Sporting Gijón have only added five points in 2017. They are the third worst local team in the tournament with only three wins in twelve matches disputed at El Molinón. Their last home win occurred on December 04 hosting CA Osasuna (3-1).

The first round’s victory at the Riazor represented the first success of Depor facing Sporting Gijón within the last seventeen years. The last time Depor won at El Molinón for an official competition was for Copa Del Rey. It was a 0-1 win with a goal scored by Donato during the campaign 1998/99 (January 31, 1999).

Garitano and now Pepe Mel have faced problems trying to find a solution for the wingers’ position. It seemed that Carles Gil and Ryan Babel were destined to be normal starters, but the first got injured and the latter left the club. Now the position witness continuous rotations, even with a centre midfielder, Fayçal Fajr, performing there.
And for the game at El Molinón a new novelty shows up: Luisinho. The Portuguese was tested as a left winger during Saturday’s training and it’s expected that he will perform there. He has played there before, actually it was his natural position when he debuted in professional football. Meanwhile, Kakuta didn’t recover in time, while Bruno Gama wasn’t even picked, so this is one of the few possible solutions. should stay at the team though performing towards the right.

Team news: Sidnei (hamstring) and Luisinho (muscle) are recovered from their knocks after the battle with Atlético Madrid, but Gaël Kakuta is out of the game. Guilherme is the other player at the injury room. Raúl Albentosa returns from suspension, but won’t be a starter, while keeper Davy Roef is on the roster too. The players out for tactical reasons are Bruno Gama and Marlos Moreno.

Man to watch: Midfielder Pedro Mosquera. The Galician is coming after making his most complete game on the season, he was having a mediocre performance before, but now seems to be taking advantage of Guilherme’s injury. In a vital game for Depor the team needs to have control at midfield, the perfect opportunity to see Mosquera shining again.

Picked players: (19) Tytoń, Lux, Roef (goalkeepers), Laure, Juanfran, Arribas, Albentosa, Sidnei, Luisinho, Navarro (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Borges, Pedro Mosquera, Çolak, Fajr, Carles Gil, Ola John (midfielders); Joselu & Florin Andone (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lux – Juanfran, Arribas, Sidnei, Navarro –Mosquera, Borges – Fajr, Çolak, Luisinho – Andone.

It’s only February, but Sporting Gijón are living the game like a final. After months in relegation the Asturians have never been so close to the safety and are aware that s victory over Depor, a rival only three points away, would mean a huge step forward, especially since the team hasn’t reacted with new coach Rubi, who replaced Abelardo at the middle of January only to win one of the seven games with him on board.

The game is so important that, in midweek, Rubi practically ruled out any possibility of clinching a good result at the Camp Nou making rotations only thinking of this match. In the end, it worked out as, despite the heavy loss against FC Barcelona (6-1), he arrives to the meeting with one more day of rest and with a full squad available.

Team news: Centre-back Jorge Mere returns from suspension and goes straight back into the starting formation Fernando Amorebieta also returns after missing the game against Barcelona due to an injury. Attacker Burgui was dragging a knock, but is fit to play. Thus coach Rubi has no casualties for the meeting and decided to pick twenty players.

Man to watch: Midfielder Carlos Carmona. The Majorcan already tied his personal record of goals at Primera: 5. He is the most in-form player in a squad that has been needing a leader, within his last ten presentations he netted four times and provided an assist. Coach Rubi has been using him as a right winger.

Picked players: (20) Mariño, Cuéllar, Whaley (goalkeepers); Douglas, Meré, Canela, Amorebieta, Echiéjilé, Lillo (defenders); Víctor Rodríguez, Sergio Álvarez, Carmona, Xavi Torres, Moi Gómez, Cases, Vesga (midfielders); Traoré, Carlos Castro, Burgui & Duje Čop (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-3-3) Cuéllar – Douglas, Amorebieta, Meré, Canella – Sergio Álvarez, Vesga, Moi Gómez – Carmona, Traoré, Burgui.
