Mel have revitalized the performance of Fajr and Mosquera, while he had the same problems with the substitutions than Garitano. The victory broke a couple of negative stats for Deportivo.

The nine notes from the games against Sporting Gijón:

- Repositioning: As it happened in the first, the second game with Pepe Mel was characterized by the constant switches in the positions of some players. Mel noticed since the start that there was a personal mark over Çolak, for this reason he moved the Turkish to the wing and Fajr was pulled into the centre. And when hr noticed that the Turkish wasn’t fine then he was replaced at minute 56. This has been a big difference with Gaizka Garitano, who was more passive with these decisions.

- The changes: What turned to be very similar to Garitano’s stage was the substitutions. The Basque coach was hardly guessing right with the changes, and in this game it happened the same to Pepe Mel, because the entries of Carles Gil and Joselu didn’t solve the problems to step into the rival’s area during the second half. It was until Ola John entered that this problem started to vanish, this since at that point Sporting were already defending with only three men.

- Revitalizing some players: It is revealing that some players have felt an instant impact with the change of coach, more precisely there are two cases: Pedro Mosquera and Fayçal Fajr. The first simply look like a new player, while the second had found a spot at the starting lineup as an “utility” player. To notice that Garitano said that it wasn’t possible to see Fajr and Çolak playing at the same time, and in the two games with Mel both were starters and even were switching positions.

- Pedro Mosquera: Simply the Galician looks like a different player now. He doesn’t only scored the winning goal in this game, but for the second straight opportunity he was the player with more touches at Depor (90, passing ratio of 83%). Truly he is a starter now as Guilherme got injured, but it calls the attention that this is happening after he and the coach admitted a personal conversation about the disappointing performance of the midfielder in the first stretch of the season.

- The saving hands of German Lux: Truly it wasn’t a game in which the rival had countless opportunities, but with a narrow advantage any save turns to be vital, and Lux was vital with his two saves in the game. The main one a miraculous hand before Traoré (81’). The Argentine has been criticized all season long for his low accuracy in the saves, but in this game he was crucial.

- A clean sheet: Deportivo returned to clinch a clean sheet for the first time in two months, the previous one was in the goalless draw before Villarreal CF (January 14). It’s important to not allow goals for the morale of a defensive line that committed errors in recent matches.

- First away win and first victory in 2017: This victory broke a couple of negative stats on the season. Depor finally clinched an away win on this league season, this after 14 attempts (Málaga CF and Granada CF are now the only winless teams on the road). This was also the first victory for Deportivo in 2017. Now CA Osasuna remain as the only team unable to win in the new year. It was also the first win at El Molinón since a 0-1 victory during the Copa Del Rey campaign 1998/99 (January 31, 1999).

- A nine-pointer: Normally this kind of games are referred as “six-pointers” for what’s at stake, but the true is that the victory feels more like a “nine-pointer”, because now Sporting Gijón lie four points away and, with Depor winning the particular series that defines a possible tie-breaker, it means that the Asturians are now three matches away.

- The fourth penalty for Depor on this season: Deportivo earned a penalty at the start of the game, it was the fourth for the Galicians and the second that was failed. Lucas Pérez (matchday 01) and Borges (matchday 13) scored their penalties, while Babel (matchday 14) failed a penalty against Real Sociedad, though later he scored after collecting the loose ball.
