REVIEW: REAL SOCIEDAD 1 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

24 Apr 2017
One of the worst games on the seasons, Real Sociedad only completed three shots on target despite creating much more, the result a narrow loss that only reflects the depressing season of Deportivo.

BEFORE THE GAME
Pepe Mel presented a 4-2-3-1 lineup for the game. The main novelty was to see Fayçal Fajr performing on the right wing, the rest was the lineup that he trained during the week. German Lux was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, while Raúl Albentosa joined Sidnei at the central positions.

Álex Bergantiños returned into the starting formation and joined Celso Borges at midfield, Fajr performed at the right wing, Gaël Kakuta attacked from the left flank and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Real Sociedad, coach Eusebia Sacristán played with Mikel Oyarzabal on the left wing, the rest was the expected 4-3-3 formation with Mexican Carlos Vela and Brazilian William José as the other two components of the offensive trident.

FIRST HALF
Very poor half for Deportivo, the Galicians simply did nothing before a Real Sociedad that deserved more than one goal. By minute 10 the locals had already created three chances to score. The only opportunity for the Galicians was a header of Albentosa that missed the target.

Depor had problems since the start. After only ten seconds Real Sociedad had its first chance, it was a cross from the left that Xabi Prieto headed out. Two minutes later the same player was firing from the edge of the area and the Basque missed the target again. At minute 6, Zaldua completed the first shot on target in the game with a low attempt that was blocked by Lux.

The Galicians tried to hold on and played on long balls searching for Andone, but they never had a clear chance to score. At minute 12, a counterattack between Vela and Xabi Pieto ended with the latter firing a shot from the edge of the area that missed the target.

The first -and only- approximation for Deportivo in this half was a corner-kick action in which Albentosa headed the ball wide. Meanwhile, the Basques didn’t release the pressure and were still attacking, though without creating a clear chance to score.

And then the locals scored the lonely goal in the game. Yuri Berchiche released a high cross from the left that went into the penalty spot, William José anticipated Sidnei and headed the ball into the top corner of Lux.

It was the deserved outcome for the team that was doing more things on the field, because Deportivo were only holding on, with Çolak missing too many passes, as a consequence Depor didn’t create any chance to score in this half.

The goal didn’t change the script and Real Sociedad continued dominating and looking more dangerous, thus the Basques were close to score the second goal through long distance shots, in the first Lux made a big save before the crossed shot by Iñigo Martínez (33’), two minutes later it was Oyarzabal, this time he missed the target.

SECOND HALF
The picture didn’t change in the final part, the best way to describe the scenario is the fact that Deportivo completed its first shot on target in the game until minute 85. Before the best chances were for the centre-backs, while Real Sociedad were more relaxed, therefore the score didn’t change.

The second half started as the first half developed: Real Sociedad was the only side searching up front, Deportivo continued to be a careless team that seemed content with the result.  Mel only lasted ten minutes in making the first change, Ola John replaced Kakuta. The change meant a slightly change as the Congolese winger brought some details up front.

The pressure from Real Sociedad wasn’t the same in this half, the locals were more settled on the field and therefore the game was boring, because Depor didn’t want and Real Sociedad were already satisfied, though they were still playing on Deportivo’s side of the field.

Since Deportivo weren’t reacting, Mel ordered a new change and Joselu replaced Çolak. The Turkish was terrible in the game, he only touched the ball in 45 opportunities and a couple of his errors passing the ball were translated into counterattacks for Real Sociedad. The draw was now a 4-4-2.

In the end the Txuri-urdines suffered within the last fifteen minutes, though it was more for the narrow score than for the pressure from the visiting side. The first chance to score for Depor in this half came at minute 76, Juanfran released a cross from the right and the downward header of Sidnei missed the target.

Until this point the only two chances for Depor in the game came with the centre-backs heading the ball out, a devastating fact demonstrating the poorness of Mel’s side in this match. The last substitution in the game was the entry of Bruno Gama for Fajr.

Oyarzabal was close to score the second goal for he Basques with deflected shot from inside the area (81’), then Deportivo completed its only shot on target in the game. Juanfran released a cross from the right and Borges headed the ball inside the area, though it wasn’t difficult for Rulli to get the ball.

In the next play substitute Sergio Canales hit the post after an individual move at the left wing. It seemed that Depor were ready for a final push, but the game ended with Real Sociedad taking a lateral free-kick and later a corner-kick.

AFTER THE GAME
Terrible game for Deportivo, the Galicians never felt comfortable and only the lack of aim of Real Sociedad, plus their indifference in the second half, allowed a narrow defeat that didn’t hide the miseries of the Galician outfit.

Deportivo have only added 31 points, which is their second worst mark in their history after 33 matchdays, but the poorness of the other teams creates a feeling of relief as the Galicians have an eight-point gap with relegation and with only five games to end the season. On Wednesday, Depor host Real Madrid at the Riazor (21h30 CET).
