PREVIEW: VILLARREAL – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

14 May 2017
Third opportunity for Deportivo s order to secure the permanence, Mel is making changes as he fights the negativism surrounding the club. Villarreal CF search for the qualification to Europe.

Referee:  Jesús Gil Manzano
Kick-off: 20h00 CET (Estadio De La Cerámica)

STATISTICS: TERRIBLE SEASON ON THE ROAD
This is the last away game for Deportivo on the season, and the Blanquiazul team is about to close a terrible away campaign after only adding nine points in eighteen visits. The Galicians only won once so far (0-1 at Sporting Gijón) plus adding six draws (0-0 at Betis, 0-0 at Alavés, 1-1 at Granada CF, 1-1 at Espanyol, 1-1 at La Palmas & 2-2 at Osasuna).

This is the worst mark for the club in this century. The last time Depor only added nine points on road was for the Segunda season 1987/88, at the time the second tier in Spain was composed by twenty teams and the Galicians ended 16th at the standings.

Meanwhile, Villarreal CF represent the sixth best home team in the league after adding 36 points in 18 home meetings. The yellow submarine is in great form, just when they are about to clinch a spot in Europe, this after been one of the four teams in the league that have won the last three meetings in the competition.

Last year Deportivo clinched the salvation visiting Villarreal CF and it also happened in the penultimate matchday (0-2 win), but the Galicians lost the previous five visits to El Madrigal (now called Estadio De La Cerámica), and in the four previous games the team was unable to score a goal. On this season, the Valencians have only conceded 18 goals at home, the fifth best mark in la liga only below Atlético Madrid (13), FC Barcelona (15), Sevilla CF (16) and Athletic Club (17).

DEPORTIVO: BETWEEN HOPE AND DISBELIEF
Round three. Deportivo face a new opportunity to secure the permanence after failing in the visit to CA Osasuna and the home game before RCD Espanyol. And the environment among the fans is between disbelief and frustration, because the team hasn’t fulfilled the expectations, to the point that the main hope to clinch the salvation now is more located in what SD Eibar can do before Sporting Gijón than of what Depor can scratch from the visit to the Yellow Submarine.

Coach Pepe Mel is aware of this environment and wanted to have an isolated team from this “negativity”. That’s why there was a blackout surrounding the players during the week, though it was lifted by Tuesday. “The optimism left us weeks ago and this fact has nothing positive.” The coach said during his press conference.

Team news: Pedro Mosquera was included on the roster after receiving the okay from doctors on Friday, but won’t be a starter in this game. Raúl Albentosa returns from suspension ad goes directly into the starting eleven as Sidnei Rechel remains injured. The other two players at the injury room are Luisinho and Joselu. Meanwhile, Gaël Kakuta is once again out due to tactical reasons.

Man to watch: Winger Carles Gil. Considered by Mel as one of the players with more quality at the squad, the Valencian has struggled to be fit in the last two months. Between April and May, he has only played 114 minutes distributed in three games, now he will be a starter in the match that could certify the permanence of Deportivo.

Picked players: (19) Lux, Tytoń, Davy Roef (goalkeepers); Laure, Juanfran, Arribas, Albentosa, Navarro (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Borges, Guilherme, Mosquera, Çolak, Fajr, Bruno Gama, Carles Gil, Ola John (midfielders); Marlos Moreno & Andone (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lux – Juanfran, Arribas, Albentosa, Navarro – Guilherme, Borges – Carles Gil, Çolak, Ola John – Andone.

VILLARREAL: THE RETURN OF THE WALL
Villarreal CF is about to secure European football for next season, and one of the keys has been the defensive performance, this team has only allowed 32 goals so far, mark only improved by Atlético Madrid (25). And for this game the Yellow Submarine pulls back centre defender Víctor Ruiz, who is recovered from an ankle injury. With him at the starting eleven the team has only allowed 21 goals in 28 matches. That’s less than a goal per match, just when the average is doubled with the captain out of the pitch.

Team news: Coach Fran Escribá will release the roster for the game until Sunday. Two players are out of the match: goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo (knee ligaments) and centre midfielder Denis Cheryshev (groin), while centre midfielder Bruno Soriano (tendinitis) is doubtful.

Man to watch: Striker Cédric Bakambu. The Congolese is on fire after netting seven goals in his last six presentations in la liga, only Messi has scored more in the same period (8). He is now the top-scorer at the Valencian team with eleven goals throughout the season. It is the reason why Nicola Sansone, a player that cost €13 million during last summer, has been benched.

Picked players: The roster will be released on Sunday.

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Andrés Fernández – Mario, Víctor Ruiz, Musacchio, Jaume Costa – Jonathan, Trigueros, Rodri, Soriano – Soldado, Bakambu.
