REVIEW: VILLARREAL 0 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

15 May 2017
As a reflection of the whole season, Depor clinched the permanence with suffering. The draw was enough as CD Leganés also scratched a post visiting Athletic Club.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Pepe Mel presented the expected lineup, a 4-2-3-1 figure with German Lux covering the goal, Juanfran Moreno performed on the right side of the defence, Fernando Navarro played on the left, then Raúl Albentosa and Alejandro Arribas were the centre-backs.

Guilherme and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Carles Gil returned and attacked from the right wing, Ola John performed on the left flank, Emre Çolak was the playmaker and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Villarreal CF, coach Fran Escribá presented novelties in defence as Daniele Bonera and Álvaro González were starters at the centre of the defence, Bruno Soriano was a starter at midfield, while Roberto Soldado and Cédric Bakambu were the couple searching for the goals.

FIRST HALF
Deportivo started in a good way, but ended suffering in a first part without goals. The Galicians had big problems to contain the attack by the sides, but Villarreal only made three shots on target. The point was gold. But not enough due to the other results.

The start was equal, with Depor trying to push and earning a corner-kick only seconds after the kick-off, while Villarreal CF were attacking by the sides, with Bruno and Jonathan dos Santos highly involved in the actions.

The locals soon claimed the ball possession, and Deportivo started to play on the counterattack. The Galicians were creating some problems through Carles Gil and Çolak, while the visiting defence was well placed to avoid problems, but that picture vanished with the passage of the minutes.

The first big chance in the game was for Deportivo, it was a low shot by Ola John that local goalie Andrés Fernández cleared to corner-kick (16’). Villarreal CF continued dominating the actions, but it was unable to create scoring opportunities.

Bruno Soriano had the first opportunity for the locals, he collected the ball at the edge of the area, but his low attempt missed the target (24’). Two minutes later Jonathan Dos Santos also attempted from long-distance, this time the ball went over the crossbar.

Little by little, the Valencians started to surround the visiting area and Deportivo disappeared from the game. At minute 28, Jonathan Dos Santos found the ball at the left side of the area after a corner-kick, but his low shot missed the target.

Villarreal CF were close to find the first goal after a cross from Jaume Costa didn’t find a receiver after a deflection by Lux (31’).  One minute later Carles Gil didn’t seize a bad pass inside of the local area and his shot was blocked.

The half ended with the first appearance of Bakambu, but his low shot was cleared by the defence (44’). In the resulting corner-kick Lux and Soldado were booked in an action that could have been a penalty. The result was good for Depor, but not enough as Leganés were losing and Sporting were winning.

SECOND HALF
Deportivo suffered a lot in the final part, Bakambu showed up and the locals ended with three strikers on the pitch, but the defensive work was good and Villarreal CF only had one shot on target in this half.

Villarreal CF started pushing and with Jonathan Dos Santos missing the target in rebound after a lateral free-kick action (47’). Two minutes later Lux had problems to clear the danger before Bakambu in a cross coming from the left, but there was no one at the far post.

At minute 51, a scissor-kick attempt by Bakambu was deflected by Arribas. Two minutes later he appeared again to force a corner-kick with deflected shot. The Congolese had three chances within the first eight minutes in the half, just when he only had one in the entire first part. It was the main reason why Depor were suffering much more in this stage on the game.

Bruno Soriano could have scored for the locals at minute 54, but his header after a corner-kick misses the target, he was alone inside the box.  Then Mel made the first change and Fayçal Fajr replaced Ola John.

At this point the results in other games were favourable, so the point was enough to secure permanence. Villarreal CF were having big problems to have opportunities. They released countless crosses and completed 21 shorts, but only one met the target in the final part.

Still, Villarreal CF could have scored in a bad clearance by Lux that was later fixed by Juanfran (68’). Sansone entered for the locals and now Villarreal CF were having three strikers on the pitch, the Italian was close to score with a shot that was saved by Lux (70’).

The second substitution at Depor was the entry of Bruno Gama for Carles Gil. Villarreal CF had the biggest chance to win the game at minute 84, Ex-Depor Adrian, who replaced Soldado in the second half, made a good play on the left and assisted Bakambu, who missed the target from the left corner of the box (84’).

Knowing the other results, Mel ordered the final substitution and Mosquera replaced Çolak, Villarreal CF continued releasing crosses without consequences and the game ended with suffering after a couple of attacks by Villarreal that didn’t end with a shot on target.

AFTER THE GAME
Solid work by the defence, though it was also true that Villarreal CF had a wrong tactic with the countless crosses that never hammered Depor and after only making four shots on target despite having twenty-one attempts. The point secures the permanence as CD Leganés snatched a point visiting Athletic Club (1-1).

Sporting Gijón can tie in points with Depor at the last matchday, but the Galicians won the personal series, so the permanence is a fact. The last game on the season is the home clash with UD Las Palmas (Saturday, 16h00 CET).
