Zakaria Bakkali is the most recent addition ahead of the season 2017/18. The winger arrives loaned from Valencia CF, there isn’t a buyout option to sign the player at the end of the campaign.

The news came fast after on Thursday it was known the interest in Zakaria Bakkali. The club closed a one-year loan deal with Valencia CF; there isn’t a buyout option over the player and he should join the trainings on Monday.

Bakkali is 21, he is a winger born in Liège to immigrant parents from Morocco. A product of the academy of RFC Liège that was early signed by PSV Eindhoven and that, despite his quality, has faced problems to adapt in two different leagues. In the season 2013/14, he made 16 Eredivisie appearances scoring 3 goals and was tracked by Atlético Madrid, but no deal was made.

Instead he stayed at PSV and was banished from the first-team after refusing to sign a contract extension, then the winger went to Valencia CF in a free transfer during the summer of 2015. He signed a five-year deal. He made 15 appearances in la liga 2015/16 scoring a goal, an acceptable mark, but not impressive in the always demanding environment of Mestalla.

Last season the Belgium lad played 18 games in liga an also scored a goal. His average of key passes per game was the highest among la liga players (3.6), but it wasn’t enough to impress new coach Marcelino. Besides, he suffered a groin injury that needed surgery and the fans were divided with him, some liked his strength, speed and ability to dribble the rivals, while others think his numbers are too poor. In the end Valencia CF opted in allowing his exit in order to gain minutes.

Bakkali is the sixth signing of Deportivo for the campaign 2017/18. Previously the club secured the arrival of Argentine playmaker Fede Cartabia, plus centre midfielders, Guilherme dos Santos and Fede Valverde, while early on this week it announced the arrival of right-back Gerard Valentín and the return of playmaker Carles Gil.
