REVIEW: DEPOR 2 – WEST BROM 0 (TERESA HERRERA)

06 Aug 2017
Depor conquered the Teresa Herrera, the rival didn’t give problems, mainly after been reduced to ten men. Bruno Gama and Borja Valle scored the goals.

Eleventh friendly game in the pre-season. Coach Pepe Mel recovered Guilherme, Juanfran and Sidnei, while Celso Borges was back after surpassing a knock. Carles Gil was the only player out due to injury reasons.

The lineup was a 4-2-3-1 figure. Rubén Martínez was the goalkeeper, Juanfran covered the right-back position, the left side in defence was for Luisinho, while Fabian Schär and Sidnei were the centre-backs.

Guilherme and Pedro Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Zakaria Bakkali did it from the left, Emre Çolak was the playmaker and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

The game meant the 72th edition of the Teresa Herrera tournament and the rival invited for the occasion was West Bromwich Albion. The Premier League club, coached by Tony Pulis, presented a team without new signings and led by Venezuelan Salomón Rondón.

Fede Cartabia had the first approximation in the game, but his shot missed the target after been assisted by Bakkali (5’). Depor were pressing in attack and the Baggies had problems in the output of the ball.

Bakkali was pretty active, at minute 13 he made a solo-play entering the area, but his final shot was deflected by a rival and went out.  The first shot on target came at minute 19, it was a low attempt by Mosquera that was blocked by visiting goalie Ben Foster.

Then Çolak attempted from mid-distance and Foster made a new save (26’). Depor were leaving a positive impression, the long passes by Fabian Schär, plus the speed of Cartabia and Bakkali, brought freshness in attack, while Mosquera and Çolak controlled midfield territory.

No scoring opportunities were witnessed in the last stretch of the first half, but a late play left West Brom with ten players (39’). Mosquera committed a foul at midfield and Livermore started a discussion that cost him a second yellow card (he was booked previously due to a late tackle).

The second half started with Depor pushing again, the first big opportunity came at minute 52, Bakkali collected a cross from the right, but his low shot was saved by substitute keeper Boaz Myhill. Two minutes later it was Guilherme who made an attempt and again the visiting keeper made the save.

Fede Valverde was the first substitution for Deportivo as he replaced Mosquera, the entry of the Uruguayan switched the draw into a 4-1-4-1 as he was playing alongside Çolak, but the figure only lasted some minutes, because the Turkish and Cartabia were replaced by Bruno Gama and Borges, so the figure returned to be a 4-2-3-1.

At minute 66, Bruno Gama made the play on the right wing and his cross was connected by Andone, but he missed the target. Then the figure was switched into a 4-4-2 as Borja Valle replaced Guilherme.

Then Deportivo scored a deserved goal, Juanfran released a cross from the right and Bruno Gama connected a rocket at the left corner of the area that was impossible for Myhil. Pepe Mel continued switching the draw and he returned to the 4-2-3-1 as Edu Expósito replaced Bakkali

West Brom never represented any problem for Deportivo, not even with eleven men on the field and worse after the expulsion, and the locals continued dominating within the last ten minutes. Luisinho had the next chance with an acrobatic shot that was blocked by Myhill, then the Portuguese was replaced by Fernando Navarro.

There was time for a second goal as Bruno Gama released a precise cross in a corner-kick action, three players were waiting for the ball at the far post and Borja Valle was the one heading the ball home. Andone had the last chance with a shot that went over the crossbar (90+3’).
