Defeat in liga against the European champion; Real Madrid were the best side, but Depor had better opportunities than the rival.

Coach Pepe Mel presented the expected lineup, a 4-3-3 figure with Rubén Martínez covering the goal, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side at defense, Fabian Schär and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs, then Luisinho was the left-back.

The trident at midfield was composed by Guilherme, Celso Borges and Pedro Mosquera. Fede Cartabia covered the right wing, Zakaria Bakkali attacked from the left flank and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

Zinedine Zidane presented the expected squad. Isco was covering the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale were the attackers, and Luka Modrić was leading midfield.

As it was expected Real Madrid had the ball, what wasn’t expected was too see a Deportivo that was creating danger within the first minutes. Andone missed twice and later two errors at defence left the game uphill at the middle of the half.

The game started with Depor bottled at their side of the pitch, Real Madrid had the ball and made a couple of dangerous crosses that were cleared by the defence. Deportivo had the first opportunity in a counterattack, Borges assisted Andone, who eluded a rival at the left side of the area to release a strong shot saved by Keylor Navas (5’)

Just two minutes later, the action was repeated, this time on the right wing, and again Navas saved the low attempt by AndoneLos Blancos were monopolizing the ball possession, but Depor had fluency in attack thanks to the quick attacks after stealing the ball at their side of the pitch.

At minute 15, Guilherme missed the target in a secondary play of a lateral free-kick. Kroos completed the first shot for Real Madrid, the German missed the target after a solo play at the edge of the area (17’).

Then Real Madrid scored in its first shot on target, Modrić got a cross from the left, his low shot hit the chest of Rubén Martínez, the keeper should have contained the ball, then Benzema couldn’t score from inside the box, but luckily for the Madrilenians it ended to be a pass that Bale collected at the goal line to net the first goal in the match.

Up to this point Depor weren’t deserving the defeat, because it had better chances than the rival, and a second goal arrived soon. Marcelo released a low cross from the left, the ball passed in from of the four defenders, but it was Casemiro who connected it at the far post to seal the goal. 44 passes were made in that play.

Then the game entered a pause as Real Madrid were trying to move the ball across the field, while Depor were waiting at the back. The lonely chances from the locals within the last fifteen minutes were a wide cross by Bakkali (35’) and two headers of Andone, the first went over the crossbar (36’) and the second was caught by Navas (42’).

The second part followed the same script: Depor had opportunities, but Real Madrid was the side scoring. The public was upset the major part of the half, because of the aggression of Sergio Ramos that only meant a yellow card, though he was sent off at the end.

The final part started with a Depor having problems to move the ball at midfield, a lot of easy passes were missed, while Real Madrid tried to pause the game moving the ball across the field. Guilherme had the first approximation with a deflected shot caught by Navas (47’).

Then there was a fight between Ramos and Fabian Schär that ended with the first hitting the second in the face, but the referee only booked both players when the visiting defender deserved the red card. This happened after Bakkali picked an injury that forced his exit, Bruno Gama replaced him.

Deportivo could have scored at minute 58, it was a corner-kick in which Andone headed the ball on target, but Sergio Ramos blocked the attempt. And in the next play Real Madrid scored the third, a combination between Benzema and Isco ended with Bale assisting Toni Kross, who scored at will firing from the penalty spot.

Depor were losing 0-3, but it had created more and better scoring opportunities. At minute 63, a combination inside the area ended with a crossed shot by Guilherme that hit the crossbar. Then Adrián replaced Borges, the draw was now a 4-2-3-1 as Adrián was acting as a playmaker.

The game was defined, though both sides were still trying to score. At minute 75, Marcelo found a loose ball inside the area, but he sent the ball over the crossbar. One minute later Luisinho sent the ball out firing from the edge of the area.

The next chance for Depor came at minute 85, and again it was wasted by Andone. It was a counterattack in which the Romanian was assisted by Borja Valle, who had replaced Cartabia, and his attempt was too easy for Navas. One minute later substitute Asensio had a chance in a direct free-kick, it was deflected by Rubén.

A last chance for Depor came after Bruno Gama was fouled inside the area by Carvajal, the penalty was whistled and it was going to be a deserved goal for Depor, but Andone couldn’t score from the spot as Navas deflected the ball (88’). The game ended with Ramos sent off after hitting Borja Valle in an aerial dispute (90+1’). The public protested the whole second half against the defender after his clash with Schär

Expected defeat before Real Madrid, though the novelty is that Deportivo had more scoring opportunities (7) than the Madrilenians (5). Andone missed three big chances and wasted a penalty, while Real Madrid scored in its first three opportunities.
