REVIEW: LEVANTE 2 – DEPORTIVO 2 (LIGA)

27 Aug 2017
Deportivo dropped two points after been leading by two goals before a rival that was superior, but that needed an inexistent penalty to tie the scoresheet.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Pepe Mel was only making one change compared to the first matchday, it was the entry of Emre Çolak. the Turkish was the playmaker in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Rubén Martínez was the starting goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, while Fabian Schär and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs.

Pedro Mosquera and Guilherme Dos Santos were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia covered the right wing, Zakaria Bakkali attacked from the left, then Florin Andone was at the centre of the attack.

At Levante UD, coach Juan Ramón López Muñiz presented the expected 4-2-3-1 lineup, with ex-Depor Jason Remeseiro, Enis Bardhi, José Luis Morales and Álex Alegria as the main references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Bad game by Deportivo, but Levante only completed three shots on target, the same number of the Galicians and the accuracy in attack was defining a game in which the defence had big problems in the output of the ball.

Levante started the game pushing up front, but it was Depor the side that had the first clear opportunity, and it turned to be the first goal in the game. Luisinho released a low cross from the left, after four players, including two of Depor, were unable to control it, Fede Cartabia came from behind to score with a low shot into the far post of local goalie Raúl Fernández.

Levante UD tried to react quickly and Morales could have tied the game one minute later, but the drilling and crossed shot of the attacker was deflected by Rubén Martínez (5’). Deportivo were leading in the scoresheet, but the Galicians didn’t feel comfortable before the local pressure.

Morales and Toño were daggers on the left, and with Enis Bardhi also active on the right, Depor’s defense suffered a lot. Luisinho was even already booked by minute 10. Campaña could have scored at minute 16, but his shot from the edge of the area just passed close to the crossbar.

At minute 26, Enis Bardhi could have scored with a crossed shot from the edge of the area, and again Rubén Martínez made a big save.  He was pointed in the previous game with Real Madrid for his failure in the first goal, now the Galician goalie was the best player for his side.

Levante were clearly deserving the draw, but Depor was the side scoring the next goal. It was a corner-kick on the left, Çolak released a high cross that went into the far post, Sidnei Rechel surpassed a rival in the jump and his attempt turned into a volley that entered at the far post. At this moment in the game, Depor had only completed three shots on target

But Levante didn’t reduce the pressure and soon it scored its first goal. Enis Bardhi took a free-kick after a hand by Guilherme at the edge of the area and scored with an impressive shot into the left top-corner of Rubén

The sin of Levante is that their countless attempts were ending in nothing, because they made fifteen shots in this part of the meeting, but only three were on target. It was the same number than Deportivo, side that only made four shots in this half.

SECOND HALF
More of the same, Deportivo lacked fluency and suffered before a willful rival. Levante were reduced to ten men within the final ten minutes and found an inexistent penalty that meant a point for them.

The final part started in the same way, with Levante attacking by both sides, while Deportivo were having problems to hold the ball at midfield.  Álex Alegria had he first big chance in the half, it was a high cross from the left that he found at the far post, but the striker sent the ball out (52’).

Then Pepe Mel made the first substitution as Celso Borges replaced Çolak.  The change didn’t improve the things as Depor were still suffering, so the coach made the next substitution and Adrián replaced Bakkali.

The Belgian was doubtful throughout the week ad he only touched the ball in eleven opportunities. Adrián added depth in attack, but it wasn’t enough to create a clear scoring chance. Depor’s first approximation in the half came at minute 63, it was a combination in a counterattack that ended with a volley by Cartabia that was easy for Raúl.

At minute 71, Jason could have scored the equalizer, this after collecting the ball inside the area, he was backwards the goal, but managed to elude a rival and release a shot that was brilliantly saved by Rubén.

Then Levante suffered an expulsion, this after Morales saw two yellow cards, the second for pushing Bruno Gama at the edge of the area, the Portuguese had just replaced Andone. It seemed that Deportivo had already passed the worst part in the game, ten minutes were remaining and the first victory seemed close, especially after the third goal seemed close with the attempts by Luisinho (78’) and Borges (80’).

But then Depor suffered a bad call by the referee, Campaña made a shot from outside the area, the ball hit the post and the defence were asleep in the secondary play, a cross was sent into the left side of the area and Juanfran cleared the ball backwards substitute Ivi, who throw himself into the ground simulating the penalty.

The referee whistled the penalty and Ivi tied the score firing from the spot. Depor had the ball more time after the second goal from Levante, but their only clear chance was a header of Borges in a corner-kick action that went over the crossbar (85’).

AFTER THE GAME
Many readings to the game, Depor wasted a two-goal lead, but it’s also true that Levante UD were superior throughout the game and didn’t deserve to lose. It’s also true that the Valencians only grabbed a point thanks to an inexistent penalty whistled when the game was ending.

This is the first point picked by Deportivo on the league season, now there’ a pause due to the international action. The next game is on Sunday, September 10 hosting Real Sociedad (Riazor, 12h00 CET).
