Costel Pantilimon is the last signing of the summer window, the club wasn’t expecting to sign a new keeper, but a late injury by Rubén Martínez forced this move on deadline day.

Deportivo completed the squad for the season 2017/18 with the arrival of goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon. The Romanian is 30 and is coming loaned from Watford FC. Coach Pepe Mel was asking for a goalkeeper since some weeks ago and the sporting secretariat wasn’t expecting to fulfil his petition.

But everything changed on Friday, just exactly on deadline day in Spain. In the morning’s training Rubén Martínez sustained a hand injury, the preliminary report is that he suffered a finger fracture, which would mean to be out for two months. So, and without waiting for further scans, the club decided to move fast and signed Pantilimon. In this way Depor will have three goalkeepers at least until January.

Pantilimon has a long experience in the Premier League though without having stability at his clubs, he arrived for Manchester City ahead of the season 2011/12. He initially arrived on loan in order to replace Shy Given and one year later was signed on a permanent basis with the Citizens paying around €4 million.

In the end he only played seven Premier League games in three seasons as Joe Hart was always the first choice.  For the campaign 2014/15, he moved in a free-transfer operation to Sunderland AFC and it was with the Black Cats where he lived his best season in England, playing 28 league games and leaving a positive impression. One season later he started as the first choice, but was eventually dropped to the third seat by Vito Mannone and Jordan Pickford.

In the winter window of 2016 he moved to Watford FC on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee. Again he didn’t have too many opportunities there and only placed twice in 18 months, reason why he was searching for the door out. Pantilimon is also international with Romania, actually he was playing with Andone against Armenia when the deal was announced.

This is the tenth signing of the season 2017/18, previously the club completed the loans of  Lucas Pérez, Bakkali, Carles Gil, Fede Valverde and Adrián López, the zero-cost transfer of Fede Cartabia, plus the final transfers of Schär, Guilherme and Gerard Valentín.
