Coach Pepe Mel used a 4-2-3-1 formation with Adrian López staying at the starting formation and performing on the left wing, while Fede Cartabia was moved into the centre. Costel Pantilimon made his debut been the starting goalkeeper.

Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Navarro covered the left, while Alejandro Arribas entered into the formation joining Fabian Schär at the central positions. Guilhermeand Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Zakaria Bakkali attacked from the right wing, Adrián did it from the left, Cartabia was the playmaker and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Real Betis, coach Quique Setíén left Camarasa on the bench allowing the appearance of Juanjo Narváez as a starter. Ex-Depor Andrés Guardado was a starter too with Sergio León, Joaquín and Cristian Tello been the main reference in attack.

FIRST HALF
Mixed feelings with the performance of Depor in the first part, Mel’s team only reacted after the goal of Betis. Deportivo had big problems to move the ball at midfield and only when Adrián appeared on the right wing the visiting side gave a sense of danger.

The game started with Betis pushing up front and with Depor’s defence having problems to connect with midfield. The Andalusians were missing depth, while the long throws from the Galicians were only finding the local defenders.

The first chance in the game was for Betis and came at minute 8, a pass from Fabian Schär was deflected at midfield and Cristian Tello got the ball and his low and crossed shot missed the far post by inches.

Then Betis scored the first goal in the game, Barragán released a high cross from the left, Sergio León headed it between two defenders, Pantilimon was able to make a deflection, but Joaquín was at the box to just head the rebound into the back of the net.

Depor’s first approximation was a cross from Juanfran that Andone missed at the left side of the area. The visiting side completed its first shot on target at minute 20, Guilherme attempted from long range and local goalie Adán made the save.

But Deportivo started to react and soon the equalizer arrived, Celso Borges hit the crossbar with a strong shot from the edge of the area, Fede Cartabia picked the rebound at the edge of the area and, after dribbling a rival, released a low and crossed shot past Adán.

Tello had a double chance to score the second goal for the locals, the main one was a counterattack in which he missed the target firing from the left side of the area (29’). The game turned to be entertaining as both sides were looking dangerous, Adrián started to appear on the right wing giving a lot of problems to the defenders.

Then things were settled at the end of the first part and the game returned into the same scenario: Betis had the ball and was pushing forward, while Depor were locked at the back wasting the chance to create dangerous counterattacks due to the poor passes at midfield.

The last opportunity in the first part was a cross from Joaquín that Guardado met at the left side of the area, but his header was an easy catch for Pantilimon (45’). The Romanian seemed secure at the goal despite the action in the goal by Betis.

SECOND HALF
The final part was entertaining, Betis pushed for the winning goal, while this time Depor were looking dangerous in the counterattack. In the end, the game was defined through an individual error seizing a bad pass at midfield.

The final part started with Betis pushing upfront, Sergio León headed a cross from the left and Pantilimon made the save (46’). Then the polemic decision of the game with a penalty for Betis. Durmisi threw himself into the ground after the pressure of Guilherme. The referee called the penalty, but the assistant corrected the decision. Cartabia had the next chance with a direct free-kick in which he missed the target (51’).

Depor’s first substitution in the game was the entry of Fede Valverde for Guilherme. The Brazilian was compromised with a yellow card and the Uruguayan left a positive impression, though later it was him who committed the error in the goal.

Adrián had the next chance with a header after a cross from the left, but he missed the target (55’). Five minutes later Cartabia got the ball at the left side of the area and, instead of trying to assist Andone, he released a crossed shot that was blocked by Adán. The argentine had a new chance at minute 63, but again Adán made the save.

At this point the game was an exchange of blows, Betis had the ball possession and was pushing for the goal, and Deportivo continued to be dangerous in the counterattack.  Bakkali got injured and the second substitution was the entry of Luisinho for the Belgium.

And Betis found the second goal in an error of Valverde, the Uruguayan missed the ball at midfield and it provoked a counterattack that Betis capitalized with Guardado releasing a great pass between the lines to find Joaquín, who scored in a one-on-one action before Pantilimon.

Lucas entered the pitch for Cartabia, it was a desperate measure of a Mel that was about to lose again. Substitute Tony Sanabria could have scored the third goal for Betis after a cross from Sergio León, but he didn’t connect the ball properly (82’). Depor ended the game with a double chance. Lucas released a dangerous cross form the left, in the resulting corner-kick Adrián was close to score with a header at the near post that passed close to the net (86’).

AFTER THE GAME
New defeat for Deportivo in la liga. The Galicians continue to allow a lot of goals and the counterattack only worked until the second half. There wasn’t a proper connection at midfield and therefore Real Betis had the ball possession.
