Depor lost again, this time by details, but again leaving the impression of not having a solid mechanism to guide the transition defence-attack. It’s the worst start in 50 years with Mel having five keepers in the last six league meetings.

The eight notes from the game Vs. Real Betis:

1- Game defined by punctual things: Mel and some of his players commented that the game was defined by the poor decisions made by Depor in its counterattacks, and that Betis won after seizing one of their counterattacks. The true is that it is a valid explanation, because Depor could have unbalanced the game if Cartabia and Adrián would have made better decisions, while Guardado served the victory to his team with a great pass between the lines to see Joaquín scoring the winning goal.

2- Again drown in the output of the ball: Despite the game was defined by details, it doesn’t hide the fact that Depor are still missing a pattern of play. The defenders continue to have the responsibility in the output of the ball and the team is missing automatisms to grant the transition defence-attack. In this game, a player like Juanfran (58) made more touches than Guilherme (36), while the pass accuracy was 75%, too low for a team that wants to control the meetings.

It’s the third time on the season with Depor having less than 80% in the pass accuracy and is the fourth consecutive game in which a defender is the player that makes more touches on the field (Juanfran was the one in matchdays 01 & 03, Sidnei was in matchday 02).

3- The irony of Pepe Mel: Depor’s coach was heavily criticized for the changes made against Real Sociedad, his team had tied the game 2-2 and his substitutions disorganized a team that later lost 2-4. He said after that game that it was necessary as some men were tired. Now it was completely the opposite case, because Mel is criticized for lasting too much in taking out Bakkali and for not introducing Lucas until the score was negative.

4- The worst start in 50 years: Deportivo have only added one of the first twelve points in dispute. It’s necessary to go back to the season 1968/69 in order to find a worst mark at the elite, at the time the Galician team lost the first four games and was the bottom club. Later Deportivo reacted and ended the season 10th (16 teams in the league).

5- Eleven goals allowed in four matchdays: Definitely the worst part of Deportivo is that it concedes a lot in defence, the team has allowed eleven goals after four matchdays, and in each game, it has conceded at least twice. A big weight for an offensive line that has only scored five times.  Defensively speaking this is the worst start since the season 2014/15, at the time the team had conceded twelve goals after the first four games (Depor had four points at the time).  Mel commented that the entry of Arribas gave more confidence to the defence, but it isn’t enough.

6- Five goalkeepers in six league games: Costel Pantilimon made his debut with Depor, the Romanian left a positive impression, though it’s also true that he could have done better in the play of the first goal, action in which he conceded a rebound similar to the one of Rubén against Real Madrid.

Pantilimon is the third keeper that plays for Depor on this season after Rubén Martínez and Tytoń, and the fifth within the last six league games of Deportivo. Davy Roef was the starter in last season’s closing game, and one matchday before Lux was the starter.

7- Cartabia and Adrián: The good news from the game was to witness the good form of Adrián and Cartabia. The Asturian turned to be very dangerous as soon as he was switched to the right wing and continued the good path of the previous meeting with Real Sociedad. The pity is the chance missed at the end of the meeting. Meanwhile, Cartabia scored for the second time on the season and was the player with more shots (3) and more shots on target (2).

8- It’s too soon for Lucas: The fans continue to dream of the Lucas of two seasons ago, but the current Lucas seems to be out of shape. As it happened against Real Sociedad, the Galician took bad decisions in the few minutes he spent on the pitch. Definitely, he needs more time in order to be 100% ready.
