REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – GETAFE 1 (LIGA)

01 Oct 2017
Deserved victory for Deportivo; the Galicians had to come from behind, but it had patience and played its best game on the season to save Pepe Mel.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Pepe Mel chose a 4-2-3-1 formation with the main novelty of seeing Sidnei Rechel retuning into the starting eleven. The rest of the lineup was the same team that suffered the big loss at RCD Espanyol.

Pantilimon was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, the central positions in defence were for Sidnei and Fabian Schär. The centre midfielders were Guilherme and Celso Borges. Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Fede Valverde did it from the left, Emre Çolak was the playmaker and Lucas Pérez was the centre forward.

At Getafe CF, coach Jorge Bordalás presented the expected team, it was a 4-2-3-1 formation with Ángel Rodríguez, Amath Ndiaye and Jorge Molina as the main references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Decent performance by Deportivo in the first part, but unable to seize the couple of good chances before a defensive block that didn’t concede too much and that later gave some problems in the counterattack.

The game had a calm start, both teams were unable to create a scoring opportunity within the first fifteen minutes. Depor were focusing the attack on the left flank, with Valverde and Luisinho combining, they missed depth though.

Deportivo started to unleash dangerous attacks by both flanks, but later there wasn’t anyone to connect the crosses into the area, like the cross of Cartabia that Borges didn’t reach (14’). The visitors were unable to reach the area of Pantilimon, though they seemed dangerous in the counterattack.

The first big chance in the game came at minute 17, it was a lateral free-kick from the left in which Juan Cala was unable to head the ball properly before Pantilimon.  Then Lucas was about to seize a long ball coming from the defence, his volley beat visiting goalie Guaita, but went out close to the near post (20’).

The first shot on target came at minute 22’, Valverde collected a loose ball, but his attempt was too easy for Guaita. At this height of the game, Depor were having the ball, with Valverde and Luisinho pretty active in offensive tasks, but Getafe also looked dangerous mainly as Depor’s defence had big problems to control the speed of the rival.

Valverde was close to score at minute 29, the Uruguayan collected a cross from the left, and his attempt was punched out by Guaita, in the next play Borges was unable to control the ball after a strong cross from the left.

At minute 37, Depor had a double chance (the biggest one in the first part). First Lucas found a rebound at the edge of the area and his strong shot was saved by the visiting goalie, the loose ball was collected by Juanfran and again the keeper blocked his low attempt from the right side of the box. Then Depor had a new opportunity in a direct free-kick of Lucas in which the striker missed the target (43’).

The half ended with Depor presenting new doubts in defence, first conceding a corner-kick for a lack of a communication between Juanfran and Pantilimon (45’), and later the indecision of the keeper to tackle a play that ended with a blocked shot for Jorge Molina (45+1’)

SECOND HALF
Deportivo dominated the actions in the second part, it had the chances, but it also had to come from behind after a new error cost a goal. Mel changed the draw and it worked out as substitute Andone scored the winning goal.

The final part started with Deportivo pushing for the victory, Çolak collected the ball at the edge of the area and his low shot hit a defender and was later deflected by Guaita (47’). In the resulting corner-kick Sidnei hit the ne by the outside after collecting the ball at the far post.

And then Deportivo committed the usual error that cost a goal; Çolak failed in the output of the ball, he gave a long pass that was intercepted, then Damián Suárez assisted Amath Ndiaye, who entered the area by the left corner, he eluded a rival and scored with a drilling attempt past Pantilimon. That was the first shot on target of Getafe in the game.

The goal diminished the spirit of a team that already had a low morale. Getafe administrated the game, while Depor were having big problems to step into the rival’s area, one of the few opportunities was the shot by Cartabia that missed the target (61’).

And the important moment in the game came at minute 64, Amath Ndiaye made a wonderful play and only Pantilimon was able to prevent the goal, in the next play Depor tied the actions. A combination Valverde-Cartabia ended with Lucas picking the ball at the edge of the area after a cross from Juanfran, the Galician striker was backwards the goal and managed to turn around and release a clinical low shot past Guaita. The game was passing from a 0-2 situation to a tied match.

Andone replaced Çolak, the draw was switched into a 4-4-2 and the game became exciting, because Depor was harassing the visiting area, while Getafe looked dangerous in the counterattack. At minute 71, Cartabia was assisted by Valverde, and the attempt from the Argentine was again saved by Guaita (71’).

The final changes at Depor were the entries of Bakkali and Gerard Valentín, the later was debuting at Primera. Valverde and Juanfran left the pitch. And five minutes before the end Depor got the deserved reward of the second goal.

A high cross from midfield was collected by Cartabia at the left side of the area, he attempted a volley, but ended to be an assist to Andone, who calmly collected the ball at the far post to score from close range. There were nerves at the Riazor for the final minutes, but it was more for the narrow score than for Getafe, side that didn’t create more harm.

AFTER THE GAME
Suffered victory for a Deportivo that returned to winning ways. The Galicians were the better side, but had to come from behind after committing an error that cost a goal. Big game by Luisinho with Andone and Lucas scoring. Gerard Valentín debuted in la liga.

The victory, the second on the season, is pulling the team out of relegation. There’s a pause now due to the national teams. Depor return to la liga visiting SD Eibar on Sunday, October 15 (12h00 CET).
