DEPORíS PLAYERS AND THE WORLD CUP

12 Oct 2017
Three Deporís players have secured their role on next summerís World Cup, another one is on his way to do it. Twenty-one men have qualified for a biggest tournament in the planet when they were playing for Deportivo.

Week of definitions ahead of the FIFA World Cupís 2018. Six Depor players were in the race, three of them already secured their place, while another one will have to play an additional round in order to reach the goal. Since Chacho qualified for the World Cup in 1934, 21 players did it when they were playing for Deportivo.

On this international break, the Deporís player qualified for the World Cup and that had more participation was Celso Borges. His Costa Rica played a flawless eliminatory round ending second at the CONCACAF, though they had to suffer needing a goal in extra-time to secure the ticket.

On this international break, Costa Rica drew with Honduras 1-1 in San Josť, with the equalizing goal coming in extra time and giving them the pass, then visited PanamŠ and lost 1-2 with the ticket already secured. Costa Rica played 16 qualifying games and Borges was one of two men that took part in 15 meetings, he was the player with more minutes (1,306)

Less sweet was the qualification for Przemysław Tytoń. Poland earned the ticket in Group E of UEFA with a mark of eight wins and only one defeat (5 points above Denmark). The problem for Deporís keeper is that he never played a game, because coach Adam Nawałka always preferred the options of Łukasz Fabiański and Wojciech Szczęsny.

Actually, Tytoń was the fourth option and was not even sat on the bench (Łukasz Skorupski was the third choice). He was normally picked for the games, but always ended out of the rosters. This means the 30-year-old goalie has small options to be picked for the final tournament on next year.

Who is living the dream since landing at Deportivo is Fede Valverde. The young midfielder lived in person the qualification with Uruguay, side that ended as the runners-up in South America. He was picked for the first time to the senior squad in the past international break.

And the midfielder had a great debut scoring one of the goals for the 1-2 win visiting Paraguay, he was praised by the media and was considered as one of the best men in the game. Then, for the international break of this week, he was a starter against Venezuela (0-0) and Bolivia (4-2).

Meanwhile, Fabian Schšr and his Switzerland couldnít secure the direct ticket to the World Cup. The Swiss side had a perfect mark of nine victories in nine matchdays before Tuesday, but lost the last game visiting Portugal (0-2). So, they ended as the runners-up in group B and will have to play the play-off.

Schšr was a normal starter in a defensive line normally composed by three centre-backs. He played in nine of the ten qualifying games and scored once.  In November his side will fight for the ticket facing a rival to be announced.

The Deporís players with the worst luck in the World Cup qualifiers were Florin Andone and Costel Pantilimon. And itís that Romania ended fourth in group E after only winning three of ten games.

The keeper only played one game in the full eliminatory (the first matchday, 1-1 draw hosting Montenegro), this since the first choice was always Ciprian Tătăruşanu. Meanwhile, Andone had a discrete performance after playing in eight of the ten eliminatory games and he and was unable to score a goal.
