First goalless draw for Depor on the season, poor game in which the defence was the best thing for the Galicians.

The surprise was to see Francis Uzoho as the starting keeper, the Nigerian was the fourth goalie used by coach Pepe Mel on this season. The other two novelties in the formation were Florin Andone and Raúl Albentosa, the latter was playing his first game on this season.

It was a 4-2-3-1 lineup with Francis at the goal, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho played on the left, Albentosa joined Sidnei Rechel at the central positions in defence. Celso Borges and Guilherme were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia performed on the right wing, Fede Valverde did it on the left, Emre Çolak was the playmaker, then Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At SD Eibar, coach Jose Luis Mendilibar presented several novelties, he left Bebé on the bench and was protecting the left side with the presence of two fullbacks, Anaitz Arbilla and David Juncá. The references in attack were Kike García and Sergo Enrich.

Not a brilliant game, but at least Deportivo were serious since the start. The team didn’t concede too much before a plane rival, though later it was unable to seize the cracks at the local defence as the attackers missed accuracy.

The game was equal since the start, Eibar were trying to put pressure up front, and Depor responded with the combination Cartabia-Luisinho on the left. Their first approximation came at minute 3, the Argentine assisted the Portuguese, but later his low shot was blocked.

The second opportunity for Depor came at minute 7, Çolak drilled a pass into the path of Andone, but local goalie Marko Dmitrović deflected his low shot. The first chance for the locals came at minute 12, Kike García collected the ball at the right side of the area and released a shot that was repealed by Francis.

Two minutes later Enrich received the ball at the edge of the area, he turned around and his shot went over the crossbar. There was a high pace within the first fifteen minutes, later the game was slower with both sides been patient at the moment of attacking.

Juanfran had the next opportunity for Depor, he got the ball at the right corner of the area and his drilling attempt was blocked by Dmitrović (24’).  The Galicians were solid at the back, but later were easily losing the ball in offensive positions. At minute 32, Andone didn’t seize a counterattack and missed the target from long range.

The last fifteen minutes were boring, neither Deportivo nor Eibar had opportunities. The locals seemed impotent and desperate, which lead to see them leaving cracks at the back, but later the Galicians didn’t seize these spaces, mainly because Valverde and Cartabia were missing key passes.

The poor impression witnessed at the end of the first part continued in this half, Depor didn’t complete any shot on target and the impulse of Eibar only lasted a few minutes. Mel tried to refresh the attack, but the modifications arrived too late.

The final part started with a combination between Enrich and Escalante that ended with a header saved by Francis (46’). The locals pushed since the start and earned three straight corners, but without creating a clear chance to score.

Depor’s started to suffer, but this local impulse ended soon. The first clear appearance in attack for the visitors came until minute 59, it was a cross that Guilherme missed at the box and later Luisinho released a shot that missed the target.

At this height of the game Eibar returned to be the impotent team of the first part, but Depor missed strength to create scoring chances, so the game continued to be boring. Mel only made the changes in the final stretch, first Borja Valle replaced Fede Valverde, who had a very discrete performance.

Eibar’s next chance came at minute 80, after a corner-kick, Escalante collected the ball at the edge of the area and attempted a shot, the ball hit a defender and later Francis made the save. The Nigerian was the youngest foreign keeper playing at Primera and left positive feelings without committing errors.

The second substitution at Depor was the entry of Bakkali for Cartabia, the third was Lucas Pérez claiming the spot of Çolak. Both arrived too late as the game was already dead. The meeting ended with a disallowed goal to Sergio Enrich for a clear offside (90+2’).

A point, but it might not taste so good as Deportivo was too poor in attack before a depressed direct rival living a bad moment. The best part of Deportivo was the defence, with Albentosa playing for the first time and Francis debuting at the elite.
This result leaves Depor two points above relegation, it means two straight games without losing for the first time on the season, but with the feeling that the team must offer much more. The next game is the home clash against Girona FC (Monday October 23, 21h00 CET).
