Depor risked a lot with a plan that never worked, only the lack of aim by Messi, the saves of Rubén and the posts prevented a bigger loss. Lucas remains off, while Borja Valle are still trying to gain a place.

The seven notes from the visit to FC Barcelona:

1- A plan that never worked: Parralo used the same lineup that faced Leganés and also the same plan: put a high pressure, cover the passing lines of the rival and take advantage of the short passes with the combinations Guilherme-Çolak-Carles Gil. Only the latter worked and only did it for the first twenty minutes. The poor defence of Barca plus the fact of not covering the passing lines of the rival converted the game into a highway with both sides having quick transitions defence-attack, and off course the side that prevailed was the one with most quality up front.

2- The defeat could have been bigger: Since Depor didn’t cover the passing lines of Barca, it opened the door to concede a lot of scoring opportunities, and the Catalans scored four times, but it could have been worse as they had fourteen scoring opportunities. The three things that prevented a bigger loss were the lack of aim by Messi, Rubén’s saves and the woodwork.

Strangely, Messi lacked aim in the game. He completed eleven shots and didn’t score, he hit the posts three times and missed the target in other three opportunities in which he normally scores. Then Rubén was there to save the rest, while there were five attempts that hit the woodwork, two of them ended in goals though.

3- Lack of aggressiveness: President Tino Fernández complained after the game about the lack of aggression of his team, he said that Depor should have been more intense and should have committed more fouls. Coach Parralo agreed with his words. Los Blanquiazules only committed ten fouls in the game, the second lowest mark on this season after the seven committed in the visit to RCD Espanyol.

4- The improvement of Sidnei: It’s hard to emphasize the work of a defender when the team loses by four goals, but the true is that Sidnei showed some improvement in this game. From been a disoriented centre-back, this time managed to be alert throughout the game, which allowed him to make two key interceptions to Messi, he even lead a couple of counterattacks.

5- The night of Rubén: Just when the media is talking of the possible arrival of a new keeper during the winter window, Rubén had his best night at Deportivo. The Galician goalie made seven saves, including saving a penalty before Messi, and was one of the factors that prevented a bigger loss.

6- The poor form of Lucas: The Galician attacker was following a line of improvement, but once again is falling. In this game he tried, but was constantly losing the ball and ended the game without completing shots and only making 39 touches, the lowest mark at his team. It’s the fifth time on this season in which Lucas is the players that touches the ball in lesser opportunities.

7- The minutes of Borja Valle: The Asturian attacker started the season as the fourth attacker at the team, nobody was expecting to see him having minutes, and it was like that, but he has been seizing the few opportunities that he had. Valle had the opportunity to appear as starter in Copa at UD Las Palmas and he responded with two goals. In this game he entered for the final ten minutes and did more than Lucas, having two of the three chances to score from Depor, including a shot on target deflected by Ter Stegen.
