Disaster at the Riazor. Deportivo committed the same old mistakes and paid the price, losing the game and ending the year in relegation.

Coach Cristóbal Parralo presented the expected formation, Luisinho was the only novelty compared to the team of the past two matchdays. It was a 4-2-3-1 figure with Rubén Martínez covering the goal, Juanfran Moreno performed at the right-back position, Luisinho did it at the left, then Fabian Schär and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs.

Guilherme and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Carles Gil attacked from the right wing, Adrián López was the left winger, Emre Çolak was the playmaker and Lucas Pérez was the centre forward.

At RC Celta, Juan Carlos Unzué presented the expected 4-4-2 formation. Iago Aspasand Hugo Mallo were back from their suspension. Maxi Gómez and Pione Sisto were the other references in attack.

New exercise of impotence by Deportivo. RC Celta only needed three arrivals to score twice, the visiting side suffered a lot without the ball, but later the local outfit was worse as it didn’t know what to do with the dominion.

The game started with intensity, RC Celta had the first arrival with a low cross from the right that Schär didn’t clear properly, but luckily the ball arrived to Rubén Martínez (1’). But Depor weren’t lucky in the next attack, Pione Sisto was too alone at the left after a corner-kick action and released a high cross that Daniel Wass met at the far post to head in the first goal. A new distraction was costing an early goal.

Depor tried to react and Çolak completed the first shot on target for the locals, it was a solo-play at the edge of the area and visiting goalie Rubén Blanco made the deflection (5’). Los Blanquiazules were feeling comfortable with the ball, but later it was missing ideas.

The locals should have scored at minute 14, this after Lucas drilled a pass to Adrián, but his crossed shot from the left corner of the area missed the target. Celta started to suffer, they were unable to hold on the ball and Depor started to surround the visiting area.

At minute 21, Sidnei sent the ball out in a corner-kick from Lucas.  Two minutes later a new corner ended with the ball at the box of Celta and no one was able to push the ball in after the attempt of Fabian Schär hit a rival.

Depor continued dominating as Celta were lacking depth and accuracy in their passes, but the locals weren’t seizing the moment. Çolak and Juanfran were missing too many passes and Deportivo lacked opportunities. The next approximation for the locals was a header of Adrián that was too easy for Rubén Blanco (34’).

Celta’s next chance after their early goal came until minute 35, Pione Sisto got the ball at the left wing and entered the area without opposition, but later was unable to surpass a double mark.  Deportivo didn’t seize their moment and Celta scored the second goal in their third arrival.

A long throw from Rubén Blanco was controlled by Sidnei and Schär, but the Brazilian failed with the pass and Maxi Gómez entered the area by the left wing to drill the ball into the box, Iago Aspas arrived there and only pushed the ball in.

The hurries arrived, Deportivo saw that it was losing by two goals and Parralo changed the draw. It only loosed a rival that scored again. The locals pulled a goal and dreamed of getting something positive, but later the team missed ideas.

Parralo moved the bench at half-time and Andone replaced Çolak, but the change only pushed Depor to lose control of the actions. The 4-4-2 draw was hurrying up the plays and Celta started to have more ball possession, and Los Celestes are deadly in the counterattack.

So, it wasn’t strange to see Celta scoring again. It was a counterattack that ended in a direct free-kick in which Iago Aspas sent a perfect curved shot. Rubén Martínez should have made a better job as the ball was going into his post.

The fans started to whistle and Depor were living a nightmare, a light of hope showed up as Depor managed to pull a goal. A cross from Lucas couldn’t be cleared properly by the visiting defence and Andone managed to push the ball in from the box.

Suddenly Depor showed signs of life and Carles Gil could have scored with a shot from the edge of the area that went over the crossbar (60’). Before this play Fede Valverde had replaced Fabian Schär, who was having nose problems. Guilherme was now performing as a centre-back.

Depor regained control of the actions, but it was unable to create scoring chances, mainly because Adrián was off, the Asturian was missing passes and ideas to combine with the partners. So, the next chance to score for the locals came until minute 77, it was an attempt of Valverde that was blocked by Rubén Blanco.

Still, RC Celta could have scored the fourth goal at minute 78, but the header of Maxi Gómez hit the crossbar. Again in a counterattack in which the local defence looked terrible. Then Parralo made the last change and Borja Valle replaced Carles Gil, but Depor were already dead and lost a new derby.

Deportivo ended 2017 as it played the entire 2016 at the Riazor:  completing more shots than the rival, but losing due to their huge mistakes in defence, Celta completed three shots and scored three times, while Depor only scored once in the second part after controlling the game in the first.

The defeat, together with the victory of Alavés, is pulling Depor into relegation. The Galicians reach the Christmas break in a critical situation, losing a derby at home, leaving several doubts and with a tough calendar ahead. La Liga returns on January 7 with Depor visiting Villarreal CF (Estadio de La Cerámica, 18h30 CET). Fabian Schär will miss the game after picking the fifth yellow card on the season.
