2018 starts with Depor dropping sporting director Richard Barral. He and the club decided to break their link on Tuesday. It wasn’t informed yet who is going to replace him. He apologized for the poor results on the season.

Deportivo surprised on Tuesday’s afternoon announcing that Richard Barral is no longer the sporting director of the club. Depor released a statement informing that there was a meeting with him on the afternoon and that both parties have decided to break their link. It wasn’t informed who is going to replace him, but Barral himself offered a press conference in order to explain the decision.

This press conference took place only minutes after the statement was released. He started explaining why the decision was made, “I am leaving and having friends on here. I’ve a friendship with the president, but the team isn’t fine and it only increases the fatigue. This is an agreement between the president and I. Right now I want to thank the club for these wonderful years.”

“I gave everything within the last three and a half years. This has just increased the feeling of fatigue in all the levels. We have reached a final agreement. We have been talking about it for a while and reached a definitive decision. The previous exit of Fernando Vidal has nothing to do with it. It’s the right moment to walk away.” He added.

Barral also analyzed the growth of the team since his arrival and also apologized for the current results, “I cannot defend the performance of the squad. This is the moment in which we have more international players that represent an important asset, but the results aren’t the right ones. This is the best squad we have had within the last seven or eight years, and I assume the responsibility for the situation in which we currently are.“

“The big disappointment came on this year. We were congratulated in August for the players we had, but the results cannot be defended. You can notice there was a growth in a sporting sense, another thing is the results, we were expecting for more. Right now I feel a huge sadness. Sadness and nuisance. For me this was going to be the year of the take off. Let’s hope there still time, because as soon as the team chains a positive streak, it will go up, but they need to chain it.” He finalized.

Richard Barral landed at Depor in June of 2014 and has been responsible for planning the signings of the first team, in recent years he got more power, especially since the exit of Fernando Vidal on last year, but he has been under a big pressure within the last two seasons for the poor performance of the team. That pressure was bigger within the last two months and exploded in December with the defeat in the derby.
