REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 - BETIS 1 (LIGA)

13 Feb 2018
Déjà vu for Depor. New coach, but new poor presentation and new defeat. Still, the Galicians did the merits to pick up something, but they only got a defeat before a rival that did too little.

BEFORE THE GAME
Clarence Seedorf was debuting at Deportivo with an offensive 4-2-3-1 draw; it was a lineup with two offensive midfielder plus three attackers. Also to notice that Adrián López was the chosen captain for the game.

Rubén Martínez stayed at the goal, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Luisinho, then Eneko Bóveda and Raúl Albentosa were the centre-backs. Michael Krohn-Dehli and Fede Valverde were the centre midfielders, Lucas Pérez attacked from the right wing, Zakaria Bakkali did it from the left, Adrián was the playmaker and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Real Betis, Quique Setién surprised as he allowed the debut as a starter of defender Junior Firpo. Frenchman Ryad Boudebouz was also a starter on the left wing, with Loren Morón and Joaquin as the references in attack. Cristian Tello and Sergio León were on the bench.

FIRST HALF
Tough game for Depor, the offensive approach didn’t work as Betis was the side having the ball. The Galicians were also aggressive as they committed a lot of fouls (13), it happened as they saw themselves surpassed by a rival that neither had clear opportunities.

The game started with a nervous Deportivo, at minute 5, Albentosa failed in the output of the ball and the play ended with Joaquin controlling the ball inside the area and releasing a shot that was blocked by Rubén.

The first approximation for Depor was a corner-kick by Fede Valverde that Lucas Pérez missed by inches at the far post, this after an error by Adán (9’). Two minutes later Bakkali released a long-distance shot that went really close to the crossbar, again after an error by the visiting side as Guardado lost the ball at midfield.

Valverde picked a muscle problem in a defensive move and had to be replaced by Borges. The club reported that it was a hamstring injury on his left leg. With the passage of the minutes the visiting side got total control of the actions, Depor were locked at their side of the pitch and started to suffer.

Still the Galicians were still creating danger in set-pieces. At minute 25, a corner-kick was poorly defended by Betis and Adán cleared the ball with the foot before the arrival of Juanfran and Andone.

Depor were not feeling comfortable on the pitch, this since the offensive draw wasn’t enough to have the initiative, the Andalusians were having control of the ball and were pushing a defensive line that, at times, seemed too slow. Luckily they weren’t ending the plays or were missing aim, like the long throw from Ryad Boudebouz that went out (29’).

The Galicians improved within the final five minutes and there were some opportunities to claim the lead, including a triple chance in a corner-kick in which Adán failed again (39’), two minutes later a great play by Bakalli ended with a shot of Adrián that was deflected to corner-kick. It was also noticed a more aggressive Depor in this half, the Galicians committed 13 fouls (6 only by Andone),, while Betis didn’t commit any foul.

SECOND HALF
The game changed in the second part, but only after Betis scored. Depor had several chances to tie the actions, the best one on the boots of Andone, who hit the post, but the Galicians are still a dead team when the circumstances are adverse

The final part started with Depor making a tactical change, Lucas joined Andone in attack and the draw was 4-4-2, Bakkali and Adrian were attacking by the sides. The first chance was for Betis with a shot by Boudebouz that was blocked by Rubén (51’).

In the next play, a corner-kick by Joaquin was barely cleared by Rubén at the goal line. Then the goal of Betis arrived, a low cross from Junior Firpo was collected by Loren and he scored from close range. It’s the third goal in two games for the lad.

The second substitution at Depor was the entry of Cartabia for Bakkali. The Belgian was among the best players in the first part, but he disappeared in the second. The locals started to push with the disadvantage, more with the heart than with the brain, because they weren’t creating any danger.

Still, Depor created opportunities. At minute 61, Valverde drilled a pass to Andone and the shot of the Rumanian met the woodwork. In the next play Adrián had a chance in a free-kick, but he sent the ball over the crossbar.

The final change at Depor was the entry of Pedro Mosquera for Krohn-Dehli, the locals tried, but were missing aim and accuracy in the passes. The last chances for the Galicians came within the last five minutes, first in a corner-kick of Lucas that Albentosa connected and that Adan caught (85’), later a crossed shot by Borges that missed the target and finally Andone connecting a ball at the far post and sending it out (90+1’).

AFTER THE GAME
New coach old habits at Deportivo. The team was crippled in offence and suffered a lot before a rival that, once again, did too little to pick up the three points. The rest the same old story: a goal allowed after a defensive mistake and a few chances that weren’t seized, like the attempt of Andone that hit the post.

Depor will remain in relegation, still three points under Levante UD and still giving the feeling of been a dead team. The next game is the visit to Deportivo Alavés (Saturday, Mendizorroza, 18h30 CET).
