REVIEW: GIRONA 2 – DEPOR 0 (LIGA)

10 Mar 2018
A soulless Deportivo lost again, and again leaving a very poor impression. Two set-pieces were enough to defeat a team without ideas and neither football.

BEFORE THE GAME
Clarence Seedorf presented the expected formation, the same squad that faced Eibar with the novelties of Rubén Martínez and Pedro Mosquera. Rubén was the starting goalie, Eneko Bóveda covered the right-back position, Fernando Navarro played on the left, while Sidnei Rechel and Raúl Albentosa were the centre-backs.

Sulleyman Muntari performed at midfield, then there was the diamond figure composed by Pedro Mosquera, Adrián López, Lucas Pérez and Celso Borges. Finally, Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Girona FC, coach Pablo Machín also presented the expected lineup. It was a scheme with three centre-backs and with the trident Cristian Portugués ‘Portu’, Christian Stuani and Borja García as the references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Plane first half by Deportivo. The Galicians never knew how to attack and were committing mistakes in defence. Neither Girona FC did too much, but at least the Catalans seized one of the errors to end scoring a goal.

The game started with Girona FC having the ball possession and the initiative, but there were no clear chances to score within the first fifteen minutes.  The locals didn’t have any hurry, while Depor were content by giving the ball to the rival.

The first approximation came until minute 18, it was a lateral free-kick in which the cross from Borja García was headed out by Stuani. Meanwhile, the only attempts of Depor were a couple of penetrations ofLucas by the sides without consequences.

And then the first goal arrived in the first chance for the Catalans.  It was a long lateral free-kick in which the cross of Granell was poorly defended by the defence. Sidnei didn’t mark Bernando and his header was saved by Rubén, and Stuani was faster than Deportivo’s passive defenders to end pushing the ball in.

The visiting side had the first chance to score at minute 25, Adrián assisted Andone and his shot from inside the area was saved by local goalie Yassine Bounou ‘Bono’. Girona CF were now feeling more comfortable before a harmful rival and was close to score again at minute 28, it was a long possession that ended with a shot by Pons that was saved by Rubén.

This action was followed by a low attempt from Granell and again Ruben made the save (32’). Depor didn’t know how to create danger, mainly because the only strategy was to search for long passes to Lucas and Andone.

Deportivo only gave a sense of danger within the final five minutes, first a good combinative play ended with a  cross from Navarro searching for Borges that the defence barely cleared (40’), four minutes later Andone was unable to surpass Bono in a one-on-one action.

SECOND HALF
There was neither a reaction in the second part, a soft Deportivo never completed a shot on target and conceded a new goal in a lateral free-kick. To make things worse Eneko Bóveda had to be stretched off.

The game returned to the routine in the second half, the actions were slow as the locals were content with the scoresheet, while Depor continued to be a ghost, clueless in attack and doubtful in defence. The first opportunity in the final part was a long-range shot of Maffeo that Rubén saved (49’). Two minutes later Mujica was close to capitalize a corner-kick, but his shot was blocked.

And then the second goal arrived, again in a lateral free-kick action. Maffeo released a long cross and this time it was Juanpe who connected the ball at the penalty spot past Rubén. The locals haven’t created too much in the half until this point, but at least they had order and a plan.

The game was over at this point, with thirty minutes left the Galicians were dead and had no spirit to revert the two-goal disadvantage.   The first modification at Deportivo was the entry of Bakkali for Muntari. It didn’t change anything.

Then Eneko Bóveda sustained an injury and had to be stretched off. Juanfran replaced him. It seemed as a serious case, but Seedorf said after the game that it was only a muscle issue and that scans need to be made.

The only chance for Depor in the second part was a solo-play of Adrián in which he couldn’t beat Bono despite Andone was better placed (82’). A desperate Seedorf made the last change and
Borja Valle replaced Albentosa, with the move Mosquera ended the game as a centre-back.

AFTER THE GAME
The nightmare continued in A Coruńa with another plane presentation by Deportivo, Los Blanquiazules simply didn’t deserve anything as they barely created danger, and later allowed two goals in set-pieces.

The defeat leaves Deportivo in relegation and once again pending of the results of Levante UD and UD Las Palmas. Precisely, the Canarians are the next rivals that will visit the Riazor (Saturday, 13h00 CET).
