PREVIEW: ATLÉTICO – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

01 Apr 2018
Deportivo play one of its last cards in the war for the permanence. Atlético arrive in a weird situation as it barely have eleven men to present a starting lineup.

Referee: Daniel Jesús Trujillo Suárez
Kick-off: 20h45 CET (Wanda Metropolitano)

STATISTICS: UNDEFEATED AT HOME
Atlético Madrid are the current runners-up in la liga, and big part of this is related to their performance at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. This stadium exists since 1994, but Atlético bought it last year and so far nobody in la liga has been able to get the three points there.

Atlético has won 10 of the 14 home games on the season, only four sides were able to get a point there: FC Barcelona (1-1), Villarreal CF (1-1), Real Madrid (0-0) and Girona FC (1-1). Taking in mind all competitions, the Madrilenians have only lost six games on the season, two of the at the Wanda stadium: 1-2 Vs. Chelsea FC (Champions League, September 29) and 1-2 Vs. Sevilla CF (Copa Del Rey, January 17).

Meanwhile, Deportivo arrive to the meeting after spending 14 straight matchdays without winning a Primera game, a new winless game will mean a negative record at the club. And the precedents don’t invite to be positive, because Depor have lost the last 11 visits to Atlético. The last victory visiting Los Rojiblancos was the 1-3 of the campaign 1999/2000.

DEPORTIVO: LAST HOPE
Deportivo failed in the most accessible part of the calendar, now it has to search for the points during the most complicate meetings, starting with their visit to the Wanda stadium. With Levante UD getting a point on Saturday (1-1 at Girona FC), a victory will reduce the distance with salvation to six points. Still complicated, just like this match.

Seedorf didn’t test anything special during the international break, so it’s expected that he won’t make too many modifications to the tam that drew against UD Las Palmas. Actually, the only expected novelty is the reappearance of Luisinho claiming the spot of suspended Fernando Navarro.

Team news: There are five casualties for the game. Four men are at the injury room: Eneko Bóveda, Fede Cartabia, Fede Valverde and Celso Borges. Then Fernando Navarro is suspended with five yellow cards. Keeper Przemysław Tytoń is out for tactical reasons, the remaining 19 men were picked for the meeting.

Lucas Pérez (adductor), Florin Andone (thigh), Sidnei (soleus muscle), Luisinho (hamstring) and Sulleyman Muntari (muscle) surpassed their physical problems and on Friday received the medical okay to play.

Man to watch: Playmaker Emre Çolak. If Depor want to get something from this game it must be practicing football, and the best resource for this is the Turkish man, who still trying to earn a fixed spot at Depor’s starting lineup.

Picked players: (19) Rubén Martínez, Kóval (goalkeepers); Juanfran, Gerard Valentín, Sidnei, Schär, Albentosa, Luisinho (defenders); Muntari, Mosquera, Guilherme, Çolak, Krohn-Dehli, Carles Gil, Bakkali (midfielders); Adrián, Lucas Pérez, Andone & Borja Valle (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Rubén Martínez - Juanfran, Sidnei, Albentosa, Luisinho – Adrián, Muntari, Guilherme, Çolak – Lucas, Andone.

ATLÉTICO: UNUSUAL SITUATION
Despite been alive in two competitions, Atlético’s officials had no problems in reducing the number of players at the first team. Luciano Vietto was loaned to Valencia CF early in January, while Augusto Fernández was transferred to China for €4.5 million. Thus only 19 men stay at the first team. It seems not enough for the definitive part of the calendar.

And for the game against Deportivo the situation is delicate as there are six casualties and coach Diego Simeone had to pick five lads from the academy in order to fill the gaps. One of them, Carlos Isaac, is going to be a starter at the right side of the defence. The fans have been questioning these decisions and these games are going to demonstrate who was wrong.

Team news: Šime Vrsaljko didn’t surpass a knock and is the last casualty for the game, for this reason Carlos Isaac is going to start. Striker Antoine Griezmann picked the fifth yellow card of the season in the visit to Villarreal CF, while playmaker Vitolo was sent off in that same meeting, so both are suspended. Then two more players are injured: left-back Filipe Luis (leg fracture) and centre-back José María Giménez (ankle knock). The lads from the academy picked for the game are Carlos Isaac, Antonio Montoro, Keidi Baré, Toni Moya and Juan Agüero

Man to watch: Winger Saúl Ñíguez. Two of his six goals on the season came within his last four appearances with the club. He has also scored twice within the last three visits of Deportivo. Taking in mind the poor level of the side defenders at the Galician team, this is clearly the main source of danger for this match.

Picked players: (18) Oblak, Werner (goalkeepers); Godín, Savic, Lucas Hernández, Carlos Isaac, Montoro (defenders); Thomas, Koke, Saúl Ñíguez, Gabi, Keidi, Toni Moya (midfielders); Torres, Correa, Gameiro, Costa & Juan Agüero (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Oblak – Carlos Isaac, Savic, Godín, Lucas Hernández – Saúl, Gabi, Thomas, Koke – Correa, Gameiro
