Squad news

Depor continued in the descending line to Segunda, this time it made a serious game and only fell after a polemic penalty whistled to Atlético.

Clarence Seedorf surprised as Florin Andone was left on the bench. Instead Pedro Mosquera was a starter in a 4-3-3 figure. Rubén Martínez was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right-back position, Luisinho played at the left, then Sidnei and Raúl Albentosa were the centre-backs.

The trio at midfield was composed by Pedro Mosquera, Guilherme and Sulleyman Muntari. Adrian López attacked from the right wing, Emre Çolak did it from the left, then Lucas Pérez was the centre forward.

At Atlético Madrid, Diego Simeone presented the expected squad, the only one that was possible due to the casualties. Ángel Correa an Kevin Gameiro were the strikers, with Saúl Ñíguez and Koke Resurrección attacking from the sides

Unfair punishment, because Depor were better and had more chances, but a polemic decision of the referee granted the local advantage at half-time. The Galicians damaged Atlético on the left wing defended by debutant Carlos Isaac

The game had a slow start, Atlético had the ball since the start, but it wasn’t putting too much pressure, while Depor were content holding back and waiting for a counterattack. With the passage of the minutes the locals started to spend more time in offensive tasks and their first opportunity was a long-distances shot of Koke that went close to the crossbar (9’).

Depor were holding on, but at the same time it was having big problems to contain the quick transitions by Atlético. The Madrilenians were also starting to put pressure in the output of the ball, so the Galicians started to commit errors at the time of passing the ball.

And Deportivo had the first big opportunity in the game, a long throw searching for Lucas was poorly defended by Savic, the Galician attacker ran and faced Oblak one-on-one and the goalie made the save with a leg (19’).

One minute later Correa attempted from the edge of the area, his low shot was blocked by Rubén.  At minute 23, Çolak made a great play dribbling two rivals at midfield, he then assisted Lucas, who later attempted a crossed shot that missed the target (23’).

Depor were creating a lot of damage on the left wing defended by debutant Carlos Isaac, the next chance also came there with Adrián releasing a cross that Lucas headed on target, but Oblak was well-placed (25’). Suddenly it was Depor the side deserving the lead, Muntari had the next opportunity heading over the crossbar a lateral free-kick by Lucas (29’).

Then it came the polemic play of the penalty. A cross from the left was looking for someone at the far post, two men arrived there and Saul fell down before the pressure of Mosquera, the referee whistled the penalty and Gameiro scored from the spot. Truly Mosquera was pulling the shirt of Saul, but the attacker fell down too late. The decision was hardly criticized by many fans and journalists as it was considered that many of these actions are seen in every game and aren’t whistled as penalties.

Depor had the chance to tie the game in the final stages, it was a corner-kick of Lucas from the left that Oblak couldn’t block, the ball reached the far post and Mosquera head it, but it went over the crossbar (39’).

The final part was equal, both sides made offensive changes but missed spark and aim. Deportivo ended exhausted and without a clear idea of how to attack. Still, it was one of the best away performances on the season.

The game was equal at the start of the second part, Atlético started having the ball and some approximations, then Depor started to level the game but also missed depth. The first chance in the half was a wide shot of Thomas that went wide (53’).

At minute 58, a bad pass by Çolak allowed Saul to fire from the left corner of the area, but Ruben cleared the ball to corner-kick. Depor were still a serious team on the pitch after an hour in the meeting, and the damage continued to arrive on the left wing.

Simeone saw that and removed Isaac from the pitch, Thomas was covering the right flank now and Diego Costa was over the grass. Seedorf also made a change and Borja Valle replaced Muntari.

Immediately the Asturian attacker was close to score heading a short cross from the left, his attempt was looking for the far post, but Savic made the clearance from inside the box (63’). Two minutes later Costa was close to score with a low shot that passed close to the far post.

Borja Valle appeared again at minute at minute 67, he collected a pass from Adrian and started to run alone towards the goal, he reached the edge of the area and Lucas Hernández made the saving tackle.

Bakkali was the second substitution as he replaced Çolak. The Belgian had a good chance at minute 79, he was assisted by Lucas and fired from the left side of the area, but his attempt only passed close to the near post.  Andone was the last substitution replacing Adrián, but it was too late. The Galicians lost the guide with Çolak leaving the pitch, and Atlético looked more dangerous in the counterattack.

It was a good game by Deportivo, maybe the best playing on the road and visiting one of the powerhouses in the competition, but it wasn’t enough to rescue anything after a polemic call that marked the game, and at this height in the competition everything seems defined in the road to relegation.

Because Depor are now eight points behind the safety and the demotion is a matter of time. The next game is the visit of last-place Málaga CF to the Riazor (Friday, 21h00 CET). Luisinho is suspended after seeing a fifth yellow card in this match
