REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 – SEVILLA 0 (LIGA)

18 Apr 2018
Incredible goalless draw at the Riazor, Depor and Sevilla had countless opportunities, but no one was able to score and the Galician end with a tasteless point.

BEFORE THE GAME
Clarence Seedorf presented the expected formation for the game. Rubén Martínez was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, then the centre-backs were Fabian Schär and Raúl Albentosa.

Guilherme returned and joined Pedro Mosquera at midfield, Michael Krohn-Dehli performed attached to the right wing, Celso Borges did the same at the left flank, then Adrián López was playing behind Lucas Pérez in attack.

At Sevilla CF, b>Vincenzo Montella was making rotations as his team is facing the final in Copa on Saturday. B squad member Carlos Fernández was a starter leaving Nolito on the bench. Joaquín Correa and Sandro Ramírez were the other references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Not an easy first part for Deportivo. Sevilla CF were better, the Galicians had some opportunities and left the feeling that things were somehow equal, but the Andalusians pressed in the last stretch and were close to score twice.

The game started with Sevilla CF having the initiative, Layún had the first shot on target with a low attempt that was blocked by Rubén Martínez (4’). The first opportunity for Depor was a cross from Luisinho that Adrián headed on target, visiting goalie David Soria made the save deflecting the ball to corner-kick (7’).

Sevilla CF were finding plenty of room in attack, mainly thanks to the guidance by Banega, but Deportivo were also finding cracks in the visiting defence as their long throws were finding a defence misplaced, Layún had big problems trying to deal with Lucas and Adrián.

The visiting side was close to score at minute 13, Banega assisted Sandro, who drilled the ball into the path of Carlos Fernández, and the Sevilla B player missed the target firing from close range. Depor were also having some opportunities, at minute 15, Lucas released a cross in a corner-kick action that Borges headed over the crossbar.

The game had the feeling that Sevilla CF were deserving more, they had the ball and were reaching Depor’s area with some ease, but the Galicians were also giving problems in attack. At minute 22, the public protested a possible penalty of Mercado over Schär.

At minute 29, Lucas got the ball inside the area after a pass from Adrián, but his shot hit a defender and later ended in the arms of David Soria.  Two minutes later Albentosa sent the ball over the crossbar in a corner-kick action.

Krohn-Dehli, who had suffered a knock in the face in the first minutes, had to be replaced. Çolak claimed his spot. During the week there was a big debate about the presence of the Turkish on the bench, and in the end he was going to spend almost an hour over the grass.

The best chances for Sevilla CF came within the last six minutes. At minute 39, Carlos Fernández drilled the ball into the area and Ever Banega missed the target with a crossed shot. And at the last minute Carlos Fernández had a one-on-one action before Rubén and the keeper made the save.

SECOND HALF
The final part was crazy, Sevilla CF continued to have a better control of the game and also had some clear opportunities, but Depor had more and the best ones, including a shot by Borges that hit the base of the post.

The final part started with a big chance for Pedro Mosquera, Juanfran made the play on the right and his low cross went directly into the path of the midfielder, who later sent the ball wide (46’). In the next play, Banega collected the ball at the edge of the area after a bad clearance and the low shot of the Argentine was deflected by Rubén.

Those two actions were going to be a little proof of what was going to be seen at the Riazor in this half, because both sides were having a lot of facilities to create scoring opportunities, only to later see the attackers failing at the last second.

At minute 50, Correa should have scored after a great pass by Banega, but the attacker sent the ball out firing from the edge of the area. Then Çolak had a double chance, the main one a shot from the left corner of the area that went out (53’).

In the next play Banega made a new great pass, Sandro dribbled a rival inside the area and his curved shot was saved by Rubén. The keeper had some doubtful interventions, but also made seven good saves throughout the game. At minute 63, the visiting side had a new clear chance as the shot of Sandro hit Schär and the ball changed the direction and went out.

The game was open, both sides were having chances, but it was clear that Sevilla CF were the superior side. Banega was easily exploiting every crack at Depor’s defence, but somehow their attackers were failing.

Meanwhile, Depor started to have the best opportunity starting at minute 69. Adrián was left alone before Soria, the attacker couldn’t dribble the keeper, but the loose ball went into the path of Mosquera, whose drilling attempt was deflected to corner-kick.

Çolak was close to score at minute 78, he collected the ball at the right corner of the area, but his low shot was too easy for David Soria. Then Guilherme was having muscle issues and the Brazilian was replaced by Bakkali. Then final substitution was the entry of Fede Valverde for Mosquera.

The final ten minutes saw the best of Depor in the game, after Navas missed the target (84’), the Galicians were going to have four clear chances. In the next play to Sevilla’s opportunity, Lucas was left alone before Soria, but his drilling shot was blocked.

Then Mercado failed in the output of the ball and the action was repeated, Lucas collected a long pass and this time he couldn’t release the shot (86’). Just one minute later Borges found a rebound at the edge of the area and his low shot hit the base of the far post. Depor missed aim and some luck throughout the night and the game ended with a shot of Lucas that went wide (88’).

AFTER THE GAME
Crazy game at the Riazor, there were 23 chances to score, but no one found the back of the net. Depor suffered before Banega, who was always involved in the clear chances for the Andalusians. Later Los Blanquiazules missed aim and some luck with the locals having four clear opportunities within the final five minutes.

The point is tasteless for Depor, because the Galicians are four points below the safety and now waiting to see what Levante UD do ghosting last-place Málaga CF. The next game is the visit to CD Leganés (Friday, 21h00 CET)
