REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – VILLARREAL 4 (LIGA)

13 May 2018
Deportivo had more shots than the rival, but lost again due to its poor defence. Villarreal had a three-goal lead at half-time, later Depor scored twice and the victory for the visiting side was sealed at the last minute.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Clarence Seedorf presented the expected formation for the game. Rubén Martínez was the starting keeper. Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, the left was for Luisinho. The casualties at the centre of the defence forced to play with Fernando Navarro joining Raúl Albentosa.

The trio at midfield was composed by Guilherme Dos Santos, Michael Krohn-Dehli and Fede Valverde. Then Borja Valle was performing behind the attacking duo, Lucas Pérez and Adrián López.

At Villarreal CF, coach Javier Calleja made several rotations despite announcing he wasn’t going to make too many changes.  Thus, Jaume Costa, Pablo Fornals and Samu Castillejo were starters. The reference in attack was Carlos Bacca.

FIRST HALF
Rubbish first half by Deportivo’s defence, the team deserved to score, but conceded too much in defence before a rival that showed their punch. Pablo Fornals and Samu Castillejo punished a defensive line that was barely making the effort to block the plays.

The game started with the first goal from Villarreal CF. It came after only 65 seconds and after the visiting side passed the ball across the whole attacking line. Mario Gaspar assisted Samu Castillejo at the right corner of the area and he released an impressive curved shot into the left top-corner of Rubén.

One minute later, the visiting side was close to score again. Albentosa failed in the output of the ball and Castillejo assisted Carlos Bacca, who missed the target with his low and crossed shot from the left side of the area.

Depor were lost and the Valencians had a new opportunity, at minute 7, again it was with Castillejo assisting Carlos Bacca and this time the Colombian was collecting a cross from the left, he slightly deflected the ball and his attempt went close to the far post.

The first chance for Deportivo in the game came at minute 10, Juanfran released a low cross from the right and Borja Valle headed the ball into the near post, but Sergio Asenjo was there to make the save.

Three minutes later a new cross from Castillejo was found by Bacca at the edge of the area, but the Colombian didn’t connect the ball properly and his attempt turned into a volley that was saved by Rubén.

Depor were lost and didn’t have any control of midfield territory. By minute 16, Villareal CF already had five clear chances to score. The fifth was a new attempt of Bacca saved by Rubén. Depor were also finding cracks at Villarreal’s defence, at minute 17 a counterattack ended with a cross of Borja Valle that was barely cleared by a defender and before the arrival of Adrián.

Lucas had a good chance at minute 20, he collected a rebound at the edge of the area and his strong shot was saved by Asenjo. Three minutes later Fornals collected the ball at the edge of the area and his low shot was saved by Rubén.

Then Villarreal’s second goal arrived. It was a goal-kick for Villarreal CF that ended with the visiting side scoring without too much effort, Manu Trigueros passed the ball into the left wing, Pablo Fornals was there and his volley found Trigueros alone inside the box to score through a downward header. No one moved following the midfielder after passing the ball into the wing, the whole defense seemed hypnotized.

Depor were paying the price for its softness in defence and midfield, the Galicians weren’t bringing the needed aids to cover the offensive move of Villarreal CF, side that didn’t need too much to create goal opportunities. Depor also created some new chances; at minute 35, a cross from Luisinho was headed by Borja Valle and the ball went close to the far post.

But the half ended with a third goal for Villarreal CF, again the defence was too passive and allowed Fornals to release a cross from the left, no one followed Samu Castillejo, who just collected the ball at the box, dribbled Rubén and pushed the ball in. Half-time arrived with the protest from a Riazor that had a poor attendance (The Riazor Blues left at half-time).

SECOND HALF
Not too much changed in the second part, Deportivo didn’t change its attitude and continued to have big defensive problems, but the local team found two goals that had the game in suspense until the final minute.

The final part started with Zakaria Bakkali replacing Guilherme, and Villarreal CF were close to score again in the first minutes. Bacca broke the defensive line and dribbled three rivals before his chipping attempt was blocked by Rubén (47’).

The game was following the same path of the first half, Villarreal CF didn’t face any pressure and continued to control the ball possession before an apathetic Deportivo that were doing nothing. But suddenly the Galicians found a goal.

Juanfran released a long-range shot that was deflected by a rival and that was saved by Asenjo. In the resulting corner-kick Lucas found the ball at the far post, he headed the ball into the other post and Borja Valle was there to push the ball in. The visiting side protested a foul by the striker as he kicked a defender in the attempt to push the ball in.

The goal awoke Depor and Borja Valle was close to score again, he collected the ball at the edge of the area and his shot was barely saved by Asenjo (63’), two minutes later Lucas headed the ball out after collecting a cross from the left.

Pablo Mosquera was the second substitution as he replaced Fede Valverde.  The third substitution at Depor was the entry of Mujaid, the 18-year-old debuted with the first team replacing Juanfran. He performed as a right-back and left some glimpses of been a serious defender.

Bakkali ad a chance to score at minute 80, it was a counterattack in which he released a shot that was easy for Asenjo. One minute later substitute Cheryshev should have scored after been assisted by Bacca, but his deflection somehow went out when Rubén was already defeated.

The game earned some excitement in the final minutes, because Depor scored again. And it was Borja Valle again. Luisinho had the ball at midfield and drilled a pass into the left wing, Adrián was there to drill the ball into the centre, and Valle was there to push the ball in. Again Villarreal CF protested as Adrián was offside at the moment of collecting the long pass.

Suddenly Depor saw that the tie was possible and tried to push for it, but it was Villarreal CF the side that was going to score again. And it was Denis Cheryshev in a very similar play to the big chance that he wasted minutes before. Bacca had the ball at the right corner of the area and, after dribbling two rivals, passed the ball to the centre and this time Cheryshev didn’t miss.

AFTER THE GAME
Sad ending of the season at the Riazor. It was a weird game, because Villarreal had a three-goal lead at half-time and had plenty of opportunities for more, but Depor completed more shots and caressed the equalizer, the Valencians had to score at the last minute to secure the three points.

The victory seals the qualification of Villarreal CF for the Europa League. Depor are already relegated and couldn’t easy the pain of the angry fans, who whistled the team at half-time and at the end. The last game on the season is the visit to Valencia CF (Sunday, 12h00 CET)
