PLAYERS REVIEW 2017/18: ATTACKERS

30 May 2018
Two wingers and four strikers played with Depor during the season, the wingers were a real disappointment, while the attackers had solid numbers, but could have done better.

Depor only had two natural wingers on the season, and both of them had a poor contribution to the team. Four strikers had minutes in liga and had decent numbers, but it wasn’t enough to save Deportivo. The following is a summary of the performance by the six attackers that played for Depor on the season.

Zakaria Bakkali -Fleeting- (906 minutes on the season) The Belgian arrived on loan from Valencia CF and showed good skills, the problem is that his virtues only showed up for a few fleeting moments. If Bakkali was a starter then he was shining in the first half, but by the second part he had already vanished. That’s why the three coaches that passed through Depor this season preferred to use him as a substitute and that’s why he was the third player with more entries as a substitute (13). Seedorf said that he was dragging an injury that didn’t allow him to progress at the end of the campaign.

Bruno Gama -Diluted- (175) The Bruno Gama that returned to Depor was never the same of his first season at the club. After the disappointing performance of last season, the Portuguese winger was barely used on this campaign. Pepe Mel and Parralo didn’t like him and his participation was reduced to six league matches, his only appearance as a starter was against Real Sociedad (2-4, September 10) and he was early replaced in the second part (49’).  Later he was forced to leave during the winter window.

Lucas Pérez -Misunderstood-(2,796) Difficult season for the Galician striker, he landed as a savior, but was constantly criticized, especially in 2018 as Depor lived a drought of goals. The true is that he created 79 chances to score in La Liga, only Messi (87) created more. His 8 goals scored plus 6 assists were also a decent mark.

Florin Andone -Degraded- (1,630) The Romanian passed from been the top-scorer of last season to be a substitute with Seedorf. None of the three coaches at Depor found the way to combine Andone, Lucas and Adrián in the same starting eleven; especially Seedorf, who only used him for 41 minutes within the last 9 games on the season. Still, he was the third best scorer at Depor with 7 goals in favour.

Adrián López -Imprecise- (2,346) The Asturian was the top-scorer on the season with nine goals in favour plus six assists, a solid mark for any attacker at Primera, but that wasn’t enough. The problem was that he was taken away by the negative streak of the team in the second round and was failing in key moments. Just to remember how he incredibly missed the chance to score the equalizer at the last minute of the game against Valencia CF (1-2, January 13).

Borja Valle -Fighter- No one thought that Borja Valle was going to have minutes on this season after the arrivals of Lucas and Adrián. Everyone was expecting to see him leaving during the summer or even the winter window, but he was the most in-form attacker at the end of the campaign as his 3 goals and 2 assists came within the last 7 games of Depor. An example that anything is possible is any player fights hard in every training session.
