Ignacio ‘Natxo’ González will be the coach of Deportivo for the Segunda season 2018/19. The official announcement will be made in a few weeks as he is currently in the fight to promote Zaragoza to Primera

On Wednesday’s night, it was known that José Ignacio ‘Natxo’ González Sáenz is going to be the new coach of Deportivo. The news came from Radio Cadena Cope in Asturias and was quickly confirmed by other sources like Radio Cadena Ser and La Voz de Galicia.

The 51-year-old coach is currently working with Real Zaragoza and is the most in-form team at Segunda, to the point of been currently third and they already secured a spot in the promotion playoff to Primera División. He still has one more year of contract with Los Maños, despite having the chance to continue on next year he has already decided to leave and accepted the offer from Deportivo.

González told Zaragoza’s officials that he was leaving during last weekend, the intention was to keep the secret until the playoffs are over, but the filtration came from a reporter of Sporting Gijón, one of the rivals that Zaragoza will have in the playoff, so a conflictive situation has been created.

Natxo González is a veteran coach that has been working since 1999. After more than 180 matches at Segunda B, he landed at Deportivo Alavés for the season 2012/13. He earned the promotion to Segunda A that year, and in the following campaign he only lasted 16 games after a negative run of seven Segunda games without a win.

For the campaign 2014/15, González was signed by CF Reus Deportiu at Segunda B, and again clinched the promotion to Segunda A after qualifying for the playoff in straight seasons. He earned a second chance at the second tier, and this time he made a good job, because his Reus ended 11th at Segunda on last campaign.

For the present season he was signed by Real Zaragoza and, despite having the ninth lowest budget in Liga 1|2|3, he has put Los Maños in the playoff after a mediocre first round, and it’s that the Asturians are the best Segunda team in 2018 with 45 points in 21 matches (14 victories, 3 draws and 4 defeats).

Natxo González was considered a defensive coach at Reus, because his team was barely conceding goals and neither was scoring. Actually, only in 7 of the 42 meetings of Reus in that Segunda season there were three or more goals scored (one 2-2 and six 2-1 results).

That picture changed for the present season as his Zaragoza play a more open game, though keeping a 4-3-1-2 draw. It’s a very similar scheme to the one of Seedorf in his last stage at Depor as Natxo González is playing with three centre midfielders and without natural wingers.
