WORLD CUP REPORT: BORGES

30 Jun 2018
It cannot be said that it was a bad tournament for Costa Rica, but the hopes were higher after what was made four years before. Borges was a key piece at midfield and played every minute in the three matches of the group stage.

Costa Rica leaves Russia with the feeling of not succeeding, basically because the group stages seemed more accessible than the one of Brazil 2014, but the Central America nation was unable to pass the round and was close to end as the only country without scoring a goal in the group stage.

The key point was the pale performance in the opening match with Serbia (0-1), later the situation was  complicated against Brazil and Los Ticos almost rescued a point, but two late goals cost the game and the elimination. Costa Rica closed its short participation in the tournament with a solid presentation against Switzerland, still they had to come back twice in order to rescue a point (2-2).

Celso Borges continued to be a reference at midfield. He played the 90 minutes in the three games, always playing alongside David Guzmán in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Against Serbia he was the captain and the man with more touches for his team (70).

Against Brazil, Depor’s midfielder had a more defensive role as he was focused in marking Neymar, so he only made 41 touches (pass accuracy 77%) and had a clear chance to score in the first half that could have changed the fate of the meeting.

Similar was the situation against Switzerland, because Borges didn’t appear too much and only made 47 touches (pass accuracy 78%), but this time he had three good chances to score, he missed the target once and in the other two his efforts were saved by goalie Yann Sommer.
