WORLD CUP REPORT: ISMAEL DÍAZ

30 Jun 2018
Twenty-seven minutes and thirteen touches, it’s the reward of Ismael Díaz for his sacrifice in order to play a World Cup. The striker left the tournament injured.

Panama was, statistically, the worst team of the group stage in Russia 2018, but it doesn’t mean that Los Canaleros should be disappointed. After all, this was just their first experience in the World Cup and by just been qualified it meant a success.

In the debut the Central American nation gave a hard battle in the first half against Belgium, but later fell down to end losing 0-3, then they didn’t offer too much opposition before England (1-6). And they caressed the victory over Tunisia, but ended losing 1-2.

The presence of Ismael Díaz should also be considered as a reward, the striker arrived to Fabril for this season and, despite been playing in the third tier of Spain, coach Hernán Darío Gómez decided to allow his presence as it would be a good experience for the young player.

Still, it was a painful road to him as Díaz suffered a knee injury at the start of the year and his presence in the World Cup was in danger, he followed a special training routine and avoided surgery. In the end he was picked for the tournament though his participation was just anecdotic.

In the game with Belgium, he played for the final 27 minutes and touched the ball in 13 opportunities. Then he wasn’t used in the big loss with England and, three days before the final game with Tunisia, he picked a knee injury that left him out of the tournament.

At least the problem isn’t serious as the medical staff only reported a concussion. Not too much minutes on the pitch, but an experienced can should help him on his career. It still to be decided if he continues at Fabril, though it’s difficult as Depor would have to pay a buyout option reported around the €3 million and it doesn’t seem probable that the club is going to pay that amount for a player that won’t have a guaranteed place at the first team.
