WORLD CUP REPORT: FABIAN SCHÄR

05 Jul 2018
Good World Cup for Schär and Switzerland, they advanced to the second round and caressed the quarterfinals. Depor’s centre-back couldn’t play the last game due to suspension.

Switzerland played its fourth straight World Cup and, for the third time in those four opportunities, they were eliminated in the round of last 16. Still, it cannot be said that it was a disappointed as the Rossocrociati was always a tough opponent to beat.

They added a golden point against the powerful Brazil (1-1), later came from behind to overcome Serbia (2-1) and secured the qualification to the knockout stage with a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica.  And in the round of last 16 they fell before Sweden (0-1) in a game that was as boring as equal.

Fabian Schär had a solid participation in Russia 2018, he was the starting choice of coach Vladimir Petkovic playing alongside Manuel Akanji. Against the Brazilians, Depor’s centre-back faced problems with the mark over Neymar and was booked, but was the player with more clearances at his team (5). He was also the second player with more touches for his side (71).

Then, against Serbia, he was again solid; in this opportunity Schär had one chance to score and was the third man with more touches on the pitch (87, passing ratio 86%). He also dominated the aerial game as he was the second player with more aerials won (5).

For the game against Costa Rica, he met Celso Borges and once again was very active. He was the second man with more touches on the field (93 - Xhaka had 112), but saw a yellow card and therefore missed the game with Sweden that meant their elimination.
