SCHÄR TRANSFERRED TO NEWCASTLE

27 Jul 2018
Fabian Schär has been transferred to Newcastle United, the amount is the release clause (€3.37 million). It’s the sixth exit among the players under contract.

The club announced on Thursday that Fabian Schär has been transferred to Premier League club Newcastle United FC. The toons are paying the release clause of the player (around €3.37 million) and signings a three-year contract with them.

The Swiss defender joined the training camp on this week after taking part of the World Cup, but three days later he was already in England completing the medicals with Newcastle. The player had expressed his will to stay, but it was one of the planned exits by Carmelo Del Pozo.

Fabian Schär arrived to Deportivo on last season; he signed a four-year deal with the Galicians after paying €2 million to Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim. At the beginning he was expected to be the replacement of Sidnei, but ended been his partner at the centre of the defence.

In the end the Swiss international left mixing feelings with his performance, at times he left the feeling of been a solid defender that can join the attack, as it happened scoring goals in straight matchdays against Málaga CF (2-3, November 19) and Athletic Club (2-2, November 26), but at times he also committed errors that demonstrated that he wasn’t ready for the elite, as example the way he covered Messi in the 2-4 loss that meant the relegation (April 29). He was a starting choice for Pepe Mel and Cristóbal Parralo, but later became the third centre-back with Clarence Seedorf.

This is the sixth confirmed exit among the players under contract after the announced departures of Florin Andone, Emre Çolak, Róber, Juanfran and Luisinho. Previously, other eight men ended their contracts or loan spells: Rubén Martinez, Kóval, Fernando Navarro, Fede Valverde, Bakkali, Muntari, Adrián López and Lucas Pérez.
