GUILHERME LEAVES DEPOR

18 Aug 2018
Guilherme Dos Santos has been transferred to Olympiacos FC in a deal for €2.5 million. The Galicians could receive extra money in case of a future transfer.

Midfielder Guilherme Dos Santos has finally found the door out at Deportivo after weeks of rumours. The Brazilian been transferred to Olympiacos FC with the Greek club paying €2.5 million plus a percentage of a future transfer.

A lot has been said about the presence of the midfielder at Depor, his high cost (€6 million) was considered as excessive for what he was offering to the team, and sporting director Carmelo Del Pozo wanted him to leave since day one. The club sought for better offers, but in the end the chosen deal is for less than the half of the player’s original cost.

Guilherme arrived to Deportivo ahead to the season 2016/17, at the time it was a loan deal negotiated with Udinese Calcio. The Brazilian left a positive impression during the pre-season, but at the start of the league campaign it gave the feeling that Primera División was too much for him, for that reason former coach Garitano started to bench him after been a starter in the first games against SD Eibar and Real Betis.

But Guilherme had a second chance and ended earning a spot at the lineups. He ended that season as the fifth player with the best pass ratio at the team (83.8%) and didn’t have more minutes due to an injury that sidelined him for several weeks. His best moment was to score a brace in the visit to CA Osasuna (April 30, 2017)

Then it came the controversial decision of paying €6 million for him at the start of the campaign 2017/18. The Brazilian was on the spotlight all season long as the fans continuously questioned why the club invested so much on him. The true is that he never shone neither in defence nor offence, though it can be noticed that he brought some balance, after all he had the third best passing ratio at the team (85.1%).

This is the ninth confirmed exit among the players under contract after the announced departures of Florin Andone, Emre Çolak, Róber, Juanfran, Fabian Schär, Sidnei, Celso Borges and Luisinho. Previously, other eight men ended their contracts or loan spells: Rubén Martinez, Kóval, Fernando Navarro, Fede Valverde, Bakkali, Muntari, Adrián López and Lucas Pérez
