REVIEW: ZARAGOZA 2 – DEPORTIVO 1 (COPA)

13 Sep 2018
Early elimination in Copa for Deportivo, the Galicians made a poor first part, it improved in the second, but it wasn’t enough to pass the tie. Víctor García scored and Cartabia scored.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González sent the expected lineup for the game, which meant to make ten changes compared to the squad that faced Sporting Gijón, Michael Krohn-Dehli was the only one staying at the starting eleven, while Víctor García was debuting after playing for the first time with Fabril only three weeks before (he scored a brace in the 2-2 draw with Inter Madrid).

Adrián Ortolá was the starting goalie, Gerard Valentín covered the right side on defence. Sebastián Dubarbier played on the left, Michelle Somma and Eneko Bóveda were the centre-backs. The trio at midfield was composed by Pedro Mosquera, Krohn-Deli and Edu Expósito, then Carles Gil was playing behind Fede Cartabia and Víctor García in attack.

At Real Zaragoza, coach Imanol Idiakez  was presenting a 4-4-2 draw. Giorgi Papunashvili and Jorge Pombo were the main references in attack, with Javi Ros and James Igbekeme starting in midfielder territory.

FIRST HALF
Poor first half by Deportivo, Real Zaragoza was the superior side despite only having two clear chances to score. The Galicians were lost as the trio at midfield wasn’t working, while there were several mismatches in defence.

The game started with the goal for Zaragoza, Giorgi Papunashvili was assisted by Carlos Nieto and his low shot beat Ortolá. The locals were pushing hard and Pombo was close to score the second with a shot that went out (7’).

Deportivo were having the ball after the goal, but didn’t have the needed spark to create a scoring chance. Their first approximation was a wide shot of Víctor García that missed the target (18’). With the passage of the minutes the game became equal, with Zaragoza waiting to release quick attacks, while Deportivo weren’t finding the road.

The locals had a new chance to score at minute 30, Oliver Buff released a cross from the right after a failure of Dubarbier and Jorge Pombo headed the ball out. Five minutes later Papunashvili was assisted by Javi Ros and attempted a new shot from long range, this time the Georgian missed the target.

Depor didn’t complete any shot on target and neither created a clear chance to score in this half, Mosquera was too busy acting as a third centre-back, while Krohn-Dehli and Edu Expósito were unable to connect to with the  disappeared couple Cartabia-Carles Gil.

SECOND HALF
Total change in the second part. Zaragoza scored again, but Deportivo were better and could have even won the game. The key was to see the resurrection of Carles Gil and Fede Cartabia, who led the charge from the visiting team.

Depor started better in the half, it was having more presence in attack though it once again the Galician team allowed an early goal. Oliver Buff got the ball on the right and his cross was perfectly headed by Jorge Pombo past Ortolá.

But Deportivo reacted, first Dubarbier completed the first shot on target for the Galicians, which was blocked by local goalie Álvaro Ratón (51’).  One minute later Depor scored, a long pass from Edu Expósito allowed Fede Cartabia to face Zaragoza’s keeper one-on-one and he didn’t fail.

Suddenly, Depor was the better team on the pitch and Víctor García was close to score, this after picking a pass from Carles Gil and the winger sent the ball over the crossbar (57’).  Natxo moved the bench and Carlos Fernández replaced Víctor García. The Fabril’s debutant made a decent job in his first experience with the first team.

Zaragoza were looking tired and coach Imanol Idiakez refreshed the striking zone with the entries of Álvaro Vázquez and Alberto Soro.  But Depor continued to be the better team. Didier Moreno was the second substitution at Depor as he replaced Edu Expósito.

Michael Krohn-Dehli had the big chance to tie the game with a strong shot that hit the post after been assisted by Carles Gil (77’). Pedro Sánchez was the last substitution as he replaced Carles Gil and there was no time to create more opportunities.

AFTER THE GAME
Depor eliminated from Copa Del Rey. Bad first half and the improvement in the second part wasn’t enough to pass the round. It’s also the first defeat of the season for the Galicians. Carles Gil and Cartabia were the factors that changed the game as they awoke for the final 45 minutes.

The Galician team is now focused in one competition for the rest of the season. The next liga game is on Saturday as the team visits AD Alcorcón (Santo Domingo, 21h00 CET).
