REVIEW: GIMNÁSTIC 1 – DEPORTIVO 3 (LIGA)

01 Oct 2018
Depor came back from the defensive errors and clinched a new victory thanks to Saúl, Quique Gonzalez and Carlos Fernández. Cartabia left the game injured.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González sent the same lineup that defeated Granada CF in the previous matchday. Dani Giménez was the starting keeper, David Simón covered the right side in defence, Saúl Garcia played on the left, then Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari were the centre-backs.

Pedro Mosquera, Didier Moreno and Vicente Gómez composed the line of three centre midfielders, then Carles Gil was the playmaker performing behind Quique González and Carlos Fernández.

At Gimnástic Tarragona, coach José Antonio Gordillo was presenting a novelty as Roger Figueras was performing at the right side in defence. As it was expected, Manu Del Moral wasn’t fit to play, so Ikechukwu Uche joined Manu Barreiro in attack.

FIRST HALF
Complicate first half for Deportivo; the Galicians had the ball and the best opportunities, but at the same time they suffered in defence due to bad passes that cost a goal and almost cost a second. Quique González remained inspired and scored the equalizer after a long play.

The game had a slow start, Nástic were putting pressure at midfield and Depor had problems in the output of the ball. The first shot was a wide attempt of Carlos Fernández from the edge of the area (11’). Since the Galicians weren’t finding the passing lanes then they attempted the direct game, while the locals were relying in long throws searching for Uche and Barreiro.

The first clear chance to score was for Nástic, a counterattack ended with a long cross from the right, a rebound and a shot from Tete that Dani Giménez saved at the far post (16’).  Depor responded with a cross of Quique González that Didier Moreno met inside the area, but his shot went over the crossbar (17’).

At minute 19, Didier Moreno controlled the ball at the left side of the area, he sent a pass into the far post, and Carlos Fernández was unable to push the ball in from close range. At this height in the game Depor were already having the game under control, but an error was going to cost a goal.

Mosquera tried to make a pass at the edge of the area, but it hit the chest of a rival and, after a rebound, Tete Morente collected the ball and fired a rocket from outside the area past Dani Giménez.  At minute 29, a new error in the output of the ball was close to cost a new goal, this time Uche missed the target.

Depor were starting to lose control of the game, but then the equalizer arrived. It was a long play with at least ten touches that Carlos Fernández converted into a chance to score as he chipped the ball into the right corner of the area, Carles Gil was there to fire  a strong shot that Becerra deflected and then Quique González just pushed the ball from inside the box. The first part ended with a chance to score for Rocha, but his shot was deflected to corner-kick (44’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo didn’t have the same clarity of the first part, but it had the punch to seize its best opportunities and win the game. Nástic tried at the start of the half, but they fell down as soon as the Catalans conceded the second goal.

The final part started in a similar way than the first, because Depor were having problems passing the ball into offensive positions. Nástic seemed to have things clearer and didn’t have too many problems to reach the rival’s area, but later they weren’t transforming these plays into scoring chances.

Depor’s first chance in the half was a counterattack that ended with Carlos Fernández sending the ball out (52’).  Depor continued having problems in the output of the ball and a bad pass from Didier Moreno almost cost a goal as Tete attempted a shot that was deflected to corner-kick (62’).

Domingos Duarte could have scored at minute 64, but he headed over the crossbar a lateral free-kick by Carles Gil. In the next play Carlos Fernández got the ball at the left side of the area and his low shot was an easy block for Becerra.

Then Depor found the second goal, it was a similar combination to the first goal. Carlos Fernández was the one that lighted the way, he assisted Saúl Fernández, who drilled the ball from the left, Quique González arrived alone enough to push the ball in from the box. The striker is on fire and has now scored six goals in the league (four within the last two games).

Depor’s first substitution in the game was the entry of Cartabia for Quique González.  The Argentine only lasted eight minutes on the pitch as he had to be replaced due to a muscle injury, Álex Bergantiños entered for him.

The last substitution was the entry of Christian Santos for Vicente Gómez, and just seconds later the Venezuelan attacker scored the third goal. It was a free-kick at midfield in which Carles Gil moved the ball fast, he assisted Saúl at the left wing, and he released a great curved cross that Santos met at the far post to score with a downward header.

AFTER THE GAME
Depor suffered due to its own defensive mistakes and was trailing in the game, but Quique González is on fire and, together to the vision of Carlos Fernández and the assists of Saúl García, lighted the way to the comeback and a second straight victory.

Depor is now fifth at the standings, but the Galicians are tied in points with second place Granada CF and only four points behind leaders Málaga CF. Precisely, the Andalusians are the next rival in liga (Riazor, Sunday, 18h00 CET).
