REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 4 – ELCHE 0 (LIGA)

13 Oct 2018
Big result, though Depor had problems in the first half. Carlos Fernández scored a hat-trick with Edu Expósito, Carles Gil, Saúl and Pablo Mari shinning on the pitch.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González opted to play with Edu Expósito and Álex Bergantiños in midfield territory leaving Vicente Gómez on the bench. The draw was the normal 4-3-1-2 used this season.

Dani Giménez was the goalkeeper, David Simón covered the right side in defence, Saúl García played on the left, Pablo Mari and Domingos Duarte were the centre-backs. Álex and Edu Expósito joined Michael Krohn-Dehli at midfield, then Carles Gil played behind Carlos Fernández and Christian Santos.

At Elche CF, coach José Rojo Martín ‘Pacheta’ presented a 4-1-4-1 formation. Nino was left on the bench, Benja Martínez was the solo attacker, while Borja Martínez was keep playing on the right wing.

FIRST HALF
Depor dominated the actions and were the better team in this half, but lacked ideas and depth. It was able to claim the lead, but also suffered in the two chances had by Elche CF.  The Galician side had an early chance after a distraction at Elche’s defence. A misunderstanding between Juan Cruz and keeper Jose Juan Figueras ended with a cross of Carles Gil that didn’t find a receiver (1’). One minute later Edu Expósito fired from the edge of the area and missed the target after a long run from defence.

The first approximation for the visiting side was a header of Benja Martínez that missed the far post (3’). But Depor was the side pushing, at minute 5, Carlos Fernández fired a drilling and crossing shot from the edge of the area and Jose Juan deflected to corner-kick.

Elche CF responded with a shot of Benja Martínez from the right wing that was blocked by Dani Giménez (8’). With the passage of the minutes the Valencians started to feel more comfortable on the pitch and have a better ball possession.

They were insisting in the side defended by David Simón and Deportivo started to have doubts, but later the locals regained the control of the ball and spent the rest of the half surrounding the visiting area, though without creating too many chances to score.

The next chance for Depor came until minute 26, Carlos Fernández collected a cross from David Simón, but his header went out. At this point in the game Elche CF had lost the depth in its attack and was playing on long throws, but at the same time it was well placed at the back and the Galicians had problems to break the deadlock.

At minute 29, Pablo Mari attempted a shot from the edge of the area that was deflected by Jose Juan. The centre-back was the best player of Deportivo in this half, solid at the back and constantly joining the offensive efforts.

And Depor found the goal before the break, a shot of Carles Gil from the left side of the area was deflected by a defender. The resulting corner-kick was a short cross of Krohn-Dehli from the right that Carlos Fernández headed at the near post, the ball hit the crossbar and went in past Juan José.

It was a deserved outcome for a Depor that was pushing, but Elche CF had a big chance to tie the game. A bad pass of Carles Gil to Dani Giménez ended with three attackers before the local goal, Manu Sánchez assisted Xavi Torres and he sent the ball out before an empty net (41’).

This action came in the middle of two chances for Depor in order to score the second goal. Both were chances for Christian Santos, in the first the Venezuelan attacker sent out the ball after a low cross from the left (40’), in the second he headed the ball pass the far post after collecting a cross from the right (44’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo found the goals in the final part, there was more fluency having the ball and the aim improved thanks to Carlos Fernández. But Elche CF started strong, it earned two corner-kicks and Neyder Lozano completed a low shot from long-distance that went out (47’). The visiting side stepped into the pitch trying to have the ball and the initiative. Depor allow it and tried to counteract with quick attacks.

The first big chance to score in this half was for Depor. A quick move in a free-kick at midfield ended in a cross of Saul from the left and Carles Gil sent the ball over the crossbar with a volley from the box (54’). Three minutes later the action was repeated, now with Carlos Fernández connecting the cross of Carles Gil, and again the ball went over the crossbar.

And then Depor defined the game with two consecutive goals. Both scored by Carlos Fernández to complete his hat-trick. In the first he was assisted by Edu Expósito and the attacker brilliantly dribbled two rivals before fooling Jose Juan with a low shot into the near post. The second goal was a big error of Elche’s defence, a bad pass to the keeper, who later slipped, allowed Carlos to score at will.

The game was over now. Edu Expósito and Carles Gil were shinning with their passes, while Saúl started to bring dangerous crosses. The first substitution at Depor was the entry of Borja Valle for Christian Santos. The second was the entry of Michele Somma for David Simón. The Italian was playing as a right-back.

Depor had time to find a fourth goal, a bad clearance from Elche CF ended in the boots of Carles Gil, who sent the ball into the right side of the area, his volley passed between two defenders, who were to slow to clear the danger and Borja Valle came from behind to push the ball in.

Pedro Sánchez was the last substitution as he replaced Carlos Fernández, and the winger was close to score the fifth goal, but he couldn’t connect a cross from Saúl (90+1’). Borja Valle could have also netted the fifth goal, again Saúl sent the cross from the left and the striker connected a strong shot that met Jose Juan and the crossbar and later Neyder Lozano cleared the ball over the bar (90+3’).

AFTER THE GAME
Big win for Deportivo, though the Galicians faced big problems in the first part, but in the end the punch of Carlos Fernández, who scored a hat-trick, prevailed over a rival full of defensive errors and with a keeper that left many doubts. It was a solid performance of the rest of the team, especially in the second half when the rival gave up.

The result is pulling Depor into the second place waiting to see the results of the weekend. The difference with leaders Málaga CF remains in four points. The next game is the visit to Córdoba CF (Saturday, 20h00 CET).
