REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – REUS 0 (LIGA)

28 Oct 2018
New victory for a Deportivo that squeezed its punch to score twice against a rival that only gave problems within the last ten minutes.

BEFORE THE GAME
Natxo González presented a 4-2-3-1 formation with novelties, Diego Caballo returned into the starting formation and Saúl Garcia was left on the bench, while Pedro Sánchez was taking the spot of Carles Gil.

Dani Giménez was the goalkeeper, David Simón covered the right side in defence, Caballo played on the left. Michelle Somma was joining Domingos Duarte at the centre. Edu Expósito, Álex Bergantiños and Vicente Gómez were the centre midfielders, then Pedro Sánchez played behind Quique Fernández and Carlos Fernandez in attack.

AT FC Reus, coach Xavi Bartolo presented the expected 5-3-2 formation with the only novelty that Fran Carbiá was joining Miguel Linares in attack. Ex-Depor Juan Dominguez was a starter at midfield.

FIRST HALF
Pleasant first part for Deportivo. It was a strong start from a Galician side that scored early and had more chances to score, and that later gave the initiative to a rival that didn’t know what to do with the ball.

And it’s that the game started with the goal of Deportivo, only 40 seconds on the clock and Quique Fernández was entering the area by the right after a pass from Pedro Sánchez, the striker released a low cross that Carlos Fernández met at the penalty box to end scoring after a double effort.

Only one minute later Quique was having his chance to double the advantage, but his crossed shot from the left missed the target. The coach of Reus was promising a dare behavior of his team, and the true was that they tried, but found out a wall at midfield that didn’t allow them to move forward.

So, it wasn’t strange to see Depor having three chances to score before the ten-minute mark. The third chance was a combination between Pedro Sánchez and Carlos Fernández that ended with a low attempt of Edu Expósito that missed the target (8’).

The first approximation of the visiting team was a cross in a free-kick of Gus Ledes that Dani Gimenez cleared to corner-kick (10’). At minute 18, Carlos Fernández made a solo-play on the left and released a shot that was blocked. The striker and Pedro Sánchez were leading an attacking zone of a team that was feeling pretty comfortable.

Reus were only able to create problems in set-pieces, at minute 23 a new free-kick of Gus Ledes ended in a header from Catena that missed the target. With the passage of the minutes Depor reduced its presence in attack, mainly because FC Reus corrected the mark over Pedro Sánchez, though it wasn’t suffering before a rival that wasn’t finding the road to the goal.

At minute 31, a counterattack led by Carlos Fernández ended with a low shot of Edu Expósito that went close to the far post of visiting goalie Edgar Badia. Within the last fifteen minutes Depor had a more passive attitude and the Catalan rival tried to move forward, but it didn’t have a clear chance to score.

SECOND HALF
Once again Deportivo were strong within the first minutes, once again it scored a goal and later spent the time trying to release a counterattack against a rival that only moved forward within the last ten minutes.

Things were equal at the start of the second part, Reus were trying and Depor were finding the cracks at the visiting defence. At minute 49, a counterattack for Carlos Fernández ended in a short cross missed by Quique González.

Then the second goal arrived, Vícente Gómez released a strong cross from the left that Pedro Sánchez controlled inside the penalty box, then he released a strong and crossed shot into the top-corner of the goal.

The second goal unleashed Depor and the locals started to search for more led by Edu Expósito, who was controlling the actions at midfield.  At minute 63, a cross from David Simón was headed out by Carlos Fernández. The Canarian side defender was completing a good game, without errors in defence and participative in attack.

At minute 72, Carlos Fernández hit the post. Quique released a cross from the left and Carlos' downward header met the woodwork. In the next play FC Reus had its first chance in the half, substitute Álex Carbonell collected a cross from the left and ended heading the ball out when he was alone inside the penalty box.

Juan Dominguez could have scored at minute 76 in a similar play, it was a long play from the visiting side that ended with a cross from the right. The ex-Depor midfielder was alone inside the penalty box and his crossed header went wide.

The first substitution by Deportivo came until minute 80, Carles Gil was replacing Pedro Sánchez. CF Reus sought for the goal within the last ten minutes, their best chance was a curved sot from Mario Ortíz that provoked a great save by Dani Giménez (83’). The second substitution at Depor was the entry of Didier Moreno for Vicente Gómez.

Linares had its chance to score at minute 89, he collected a volley after a distraction of Somma, but his shot went wide. In that play the Italian defender got injured and was replaced by Eneko Bóveda. The game ended with a shot of Carles Gil that missed the target, plus a header of Linares after a corner-kick that went over the crossbar (90+3’).

AFTER THE GAME
Solid game by Deportivo, Carlos Fernández scored again and the team was led by Pedro Sánchez and Edu Expósito. FC Reus had big problems to display their football, but had good opportunities in punctual moments, especially within the last ten minutes.

Depor will remain living inside the promotion zone and waiting for other results in order to know if they could end up in within the first two places. The next game is the visit to UD Las Palmas (Estadio de Gran Canaria, Saturday, 20h30 CET).
