Big loss for a Deportivo that had better numbers than a rival that was effective enough to convert into goals its three best chances. Depor end 2018 out of direct promotion.

Big surprise as coach Natxo González presented a lineup with three centre-backs, it’s the first time on the liga campaign switching the 4-3-1-2 that he implemented during the pre-season. The draw was now a 5-3-2 as Pedro Sánchez, one of the best players against Real Zaragoza, was not even on the bench.

Dani Giménez was the goalkeeper, David Simón returned to the right side in defence, Diego Caballo was on the left, Michelle Somma, Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari covered the centre. Álex Bergantiños, Edu Expósito and Vicente Gómez were the centre midfielders, while Quique González and Borja Valle were the centre forwards.

At Cádiz CF, coach Álvaro Cervera was playing with Manu Vallejo and Dejan Lekić as the references in attack, Brian Oliván was also a novelty performing on the left side of the defence.

Soft first part for Deportivo, the team had things under control in big stages of the game, but the problem is that the mistakes in defence cost a goal and later there wasn’t enough depth to create scoring chances. A shot on target by Edu Expósito was the best thing made in offensive tasks.

The game started with Cádiz CF having the initiative, Depor were locked at their side of the field. But this picture only lasted five minutes, because the Galicians started to have the ball since minute 5, though without creating a chance to score.

And the first opportunity to score turned to be the first goal. A misconnection between Álex Bergantiños and Michelle Somma allowed Jairo Izquierdo to release a cross that Dejan Lekić seized inside the area.

Depor’s first approximation was a cross of Quique González collected by Cifuentes before the arrival of Borja Valle (22’). A couple of minutes later David Simón collected a cross from the left and the Canarian defender sent the ball over the crossbar.

The visiting side was suffering for the silly mistakes in defence, the first cost a goal and the second a dangerous free-kick for Cádiz. Caballo gave away the ball at the edge of the area and Pablo Mari had to commit a foul that ended in a free-kick of Brian Oliván that missed the target (28’).

The best chances for the Galicians came in the last frame of the first part; at minute 32, Borja Valle got the ball inside the area after a low cross from Caballo, but his shot went wide. Then Edu Expósito was close to score at minute 42, he collected a short cross from David Simón and his strong shot was repealed by Cifuentes.

Deportivo were superior in the final half, it had chances despite the game was intermittent, but the Galicians allowed two more goals and ended suffering a big loss. Local keeper Alberto Cifuentes made six saves, while Dani Giménez ended the meeting without any.

The final part started with Michael Krohn-Dehli replacing Álex Bergantiños, Natxo kept the scheme with three centre-backs, but didn’t forgave the error of Álex. The visiting side started pushing in attack.

The Galicians had a stronger presence in offence, but still faced problems to find the cracks at the visiting defence. Cádiz CF tried the counterattack and was giving a bigger sense of danger. The first shot on target came at minute 54, it was an attempt of Edu Expósito caught by Cifuentes.

At minute 64, Borja Valle got a rebound at the edge of the area and his shot hit the ground and was later cleared by Cifuentes. Two minutes later a secondary play after a corner-kick ended with a cross of Caballo that Domingos Duarte headed out. At this point Depor were already deserving the tie.

Cartabia was the second substitution as he replaced Edu Expósito. Immediately the Argentine had a chance in a free-kick and he missed the target (73’). Five minutes later a shot of Michael Krohn-Dehli was deflected by Cifuentes when the ball was about to hit the crossbar.

And the game ended at minute 79, a counterattack on the left allowed Manu Vallejo to collect a pass from Álex Fernández and scored with a strong shot. 2-0 despite the stats and it was over. It was until then that Natxo changed the system and Carles Gil replaced Somma, now Depor were playing with a 4-2-3-1.

Carles Gil had the last chance for Depor in the game, the playmaker collected a rebound inside the area and his strong shot was saved by Cifuentes (90+1’). Only two minutes later the locals were scoring the third goal. A new counterattack ended with Manu Vallejo releasing a cross from the left, substitute José Ángel Carrillo was alone enough to score with a strong shot.

Big loss for Deportivo, all eyes are upon Natxo González and his change of system, but it’s also true that the score is deceiving as the Galicians deserved a point. It had the best ball possession on the season (70%) and deserved to score at least twice, but the aim of Cádiz and its ability to seize the defensive cracks resolved the game.

This is only the second league defeat on the season, but the situation is too tight at the top that Los Blanquiazules end the year out of direct promotion, and they could go down to the fifth position depending on Sunday’s results. The first game in 2019 is the visit of CD Lugo to the Riazor (January 6, 17h30 CET).
