Carlos Fernández returns, while Pedro Sánchez and Christian Santos are out. CD Lugo is having problems at the centre of the defence.

First week of work for Deportivo in 2019; the players found out a frozen pitch at Abegondo due to the cold weather, and also with an unusual routine as the team had double physical sessions on Monday and Wednesday, the tactical work ahead of the game against CD Lugo (Riazor, Sunday, 17h30 CET) started on Thursday.

Coach Natxo González welcomed the new year with the return of right-back Gerard Valentín (muscle) and striker Carlos Fernández (hamstring), both trained without problems during the week, though only Fernández has options to be in the roster for Sunday’s game.

Meanwhile, playmaker Pedro Sánchez is out of the first match in 2019. He  was the best player against Real Zaragoza, and later didn’t even make it to the 18-man list against Cádiz, and now he has a muscle problem that will keep him at bay.

Striker Christian Santos stayed out the major part of the week due to a back injury (lumbago), but he joined the trainings on Friday and could receive the medical okay from doctors on Saturday, though it’s not probable that the Venezuelan attacker could be picked for the game as Carlos Fernández is finally available.

At CD Lugo, after a poor start in the league the Galician neighbor has been battling in order to put more distance with relegation, and they arrive to the Riazor after chaining one victory and two draws, but coach Alberto Monteagudo is having problems for the game due to the casualties in defence.

And it’s that Josete Malagón and Miguel Vieira are suspended, the centre-backs have been the couple at the centre of the defence in the past fourteen matches, now they will have to be replaced by Bernardo Cruz and José Carlos. A third casualty for the game is right-back Serge Leuko, the Cameroonian defender has been out since September due to an Achilles injury.
