PREVIEW: MALLORCA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

12 Jan 2019
Depor search for the three points as Natxo González closes the first round putting Carlos Fernández on the playmaking function. RCD Mallorca are trying to decide whether the goal is the salvation or the promotion.

Referee: Saúl Ais Reig
Kick-off: 20h30 CET (Son Moix)

STATISTICS: LOW POINT FOR BOTH TEAMS
Deportivo have only won one of its last five games, while RCD Mallorca have lost three of its last four liga meetings. It represents the worst moments for both teams, with the Galicians still trying to reach the first two places, and with the Majorcans trying to define if they are real aspirants to promotion.

Depor are now the fourth best visiting team in the league after adding 12 points in 10 visits. This mark is below the one of Granada CF (18), Albacete (18) and CF Reus (13).  Meanwhile, RCD Mallorca is the seventh best home team in the league with 20 points added in 10 home meetings. They only lost twice at Son Moix:  1-3 Vs. Albacete and 1-2 Vs. Málaga CF.

Depor have visited RCD Mallorca in 26 opportunities playing for a league competition; the Galicians won 7 of those meeting including the last two. The last match there was for the Segunda campaign 2013/14 and Depor won 0-3 with goals scored by Luisinho, Sissoko and Borja Bastón.

DEPORTIVO: NEW CHANGES
Coach Natxo González is preparing new changes at the lineup, after the figure with three centre-backs used against Cádiz CF and the absence of Quique González at the starting team against CD Lugo, now he has prepared a draw with three forwards. One of them, Carlos Fernández, will be used a playmaker.

Beyond been a more offensive approach, it seems to be an attempt to revitalize the vertical game of the team, which has been poor in recent games, actually Depor haven’t scored a goal in its last two games. There’s also a possible change at midfield as Vicente Gómez was tested in the spot of Michael Krohn-Dehli, the Canarian midfielder didn’t play against CD Lugo after been a starter in 9 of the previous 10 meetings.

Team news: Playmaker Pedro Sánchez is the only player at the injury room. Carles Gil wasn’t picked for the match for tactical reasons (in recent hours it was speculated that he could be transferred to a club outside of Spain), neither Gerard Valentín nor Gerard Dubarbier are in the list. The remaining 20 players are in the roster as there’s going to be a training session to be held at Mallorca’s sporting city late on Friday.

Man to watch: Striker Carlos Fernández. The Andalusian attacker made his return against CD Lugo, before that game he had scored 7 goals in 12 appearances, now the coach is ready to use him as the link between midfield and the strikers in the attempt to unclog the offensive game of the team.

Picked players: (20) Dani Giménez, Adrián Ortolá (goalkeepers); David Simón, Eneko Bóveda, Domingos Duarte, Pablo Mari, Michelle Somma, Diego Caballo, Saúl García (defenders); Edu Expósito, Pedro Mosquera, Vicente Gómez, Álex Bergantiños, Krohn-Dehli, Didier Moreno, Fede Cartabia (midfielders); Quique González, Christian Santos, Carlos Fernández & Borja Valle (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-3-1-2) Dani Giménez – David Simón, Domingos Duarte, Pablo Mari, Saúl García – Álex Bergantiños, Krohn-Dehli, Edu Expósito – Carlos Fernández – Quique González, Borja Valle.

RCD MALLORCA: PROMOTION OR SALVATION?
RCD Mallorca is the best recently promoted team in the league, they are only four points below the promotion zone and any new comer should feel content with this, but this is a special club as it’s one of a few with history at Primera and that have won titles (Copa, Supercup and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup), so part of the fans believe that the aspirations should be bigger.

And with the team losing three of the last four games in the competition, the media in Majorca is asking if this team is made up for bigger goals or only for the salvation. For the moment not even coach Vicente Moreno wants to speak louder, “I don’t know what to say. There is still a world to get the points that we lack to secure salvation. Dropping a speech or saying something that goes beyond those points would be imprudent. If we are fine, and that first objective is achieved soon, then we will see, but I am aware that it will cost us a lot.” He said in an interview on last week.

Team news: Centre-back Franco Russo is recovered from a knock and is available for the coach, therefore the only casualty for the game is left-back Salva Ruiz, who has been out since October due to a hamstring injury.

Man to watch: Midfielder Salva Sevilla. He is considered as the symbol of this RCD Mallorca, in 18 presentations he has made 6 assists (the highest mark in the league) and completed 1,051 passes (third highest mark at Segunda). His current low form is one of the explanations given for the last poor results, so the Majorcans need the best version of the Andalusian player if they want to complete a good game against Deportivo.

Picked players: Roster to be released on Saturday

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Manolo Reina – Fran Gámez, Raillo, Xisco Campos, Estupiñán – Ariday Cabrera, Marc Pedraza, Salva Sevilla, Dani Rodriguez - Junior Lago, Álex López.
