New defeat for a Deportivo that never knew what to do with the ball, and that later allowed a new goal in a counterattack. Third straight game without scoring a goal.

Coach Natxo González had several surprises at the starting eleven as Eneko Bóveda and Vicente Gómez were starters leaving David Simón and Edu Expósito on the bench. Also, Carlos Fernández suffered a groin problem and was ruled out of the meeting minutes before the club released the lineup for the game. Fede Cartabia claimed his place.

The draw was a 4-3-1-2, Dani Giménez covered the goal, Bóveda played on the right side in defence, Saúl García was on the left. Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari were the centre-backs. The trio at midfield was composed by Álex Bergantiños, Krohn-Dehli and Vicente Gómez. Then Fede Cartabia was playing behind Quique González and Borja Valle in attack.

At RCD Mallorca, coach Vicente Moreno had some novelties, like Congolese Merveil Ndockyt staying at midfield. Salva Sevilla was the reference in attack playing behind Junior Lago and Álex López.

Boring first part, Deportivo controlled the actions, but later the Galician team was unable to break the defensive ball of the local side. That lack of spark provoked to witness a first half that practically didn’t have any chance to score.

The game started with RCD Mallorca having the initiative, Salva Sevilla was leading the charge for a team that was creating some problems with its crosses and lateral passes. But the first approximation was for Depor as a cross of Saúl was about to be connected by Krohn-Dehli, but he missed the ball and ended in the arms of local keeper Manolo Reina (11’).

Depor improved in the following minutes, the Galicians claimed the ball possession and were in control of midfield territory. It helped the fact that the Majorcans decided to lock themselves at their area in the attempt to play in the counterattack.

The visiting side was having a placid game, but it neither created scoring chances. Their best attempt until this point was a header of Bóveda after a corner-kick (22’).  Depor controlled the game, but Mallorca started to look more dangerous. At minute 31 Sastre found a loose ball at the edge of the area and his curved attempt passed close to the crossbar.

At some points in the game Mallorca had a lane of seven men at the edge of their area, while Depor were content moving the ball in and out of that frame. Pablo Mari tried to break the routine firing from long range and his shot passed close to the crossbar (35’).

Deportivo was unable to seize the ball possession and fell before a rival that seized its best moment to score a great goal. Christian Santos could have scored at the last minute, but the ball hit the crossbar.

The final part started with the same script: Depor had the ball and RCD Mallorca were trying to surprise in the counterattack. The locals had a big chance to claim the lead after a shot of Sastre hit Pablo Mari and later the near post (54’). In the resulting corner-kick, Dani Giménez blocked the ball after the defence failed to clear the danger.

Depor’s first chance to score in the half was a free-kick of Cartabia that Domingos Duarte headed on target, and Manolo Reina made the save (61’). Then Mallorca had a double chance, first a shot of Sastre was miraculously deflected by Dani Giménez (64’), in the resulting corner-kick substitute Abdón Prats hit the crossbar after heading the ball inside the box.

Suddenly, the visiting side had lost control of the actions and Natxo made the first changes, Edu Expósito and Christian Santos replaced Krohn-Dehli and Cartabia. But nothing changed and RCD Mallorca were going to find a goal.

Borja Valle fell in an offensive position, no foul was whistled and Lago Junior seized the situation to reach the edge of the area and unleash a rocket between two defenders past Dani Giménez.

Depor were now desperate and Natxo replaced Bóveda with David Simón, Mallorca continued to look dangerous, but Depor had a big chance to tie the game at the last-minute. A cross from Saúl was headed by Christian Santos, the ball hit Antonio Raíllo and then the crossbar to end cleared later by a defender.

Dull game by Deportivo. The Galicians had the ball, but never translated the dominance into scoring chances. The rival had more opportunities and seized one of them to cause the third defeat on the season for Los Blanquiazules, the second within the last two games.

The result is still leaving Depor close to the first two positions, but also close to lose the spot inside the promotion zone. This game closed the first round, the next game is the visit of Albacete Balompié to the Riazor (Sunday, 18h00 CET)
