NOTES FROM THE GAME VS ALBACETE

22 Jan 2019
A system that was the right call against a rival that opened the lines, the best game of Cartabia on the season and the first free-kick goal in almost two years.

The five notes from the game Vs. Albacete Balompié

1- An inferior rival: Once again the Riazor turned to be a scary field for a big rival. As it happened with Sporting Gijón, Granada CF and Málaga CF, the rival arrived with the baggage of been tough (Albacete had 12 games without losing) and the game turned to be a one-side picture with a Deportivo that was totally superior. A lot can be said about the things that Deportivo did well, but at the same time it should be admitted the rival played a soft game in which they only completed one shot on target. A picture at the Riazor that has been normal during this season.

2- The 4-3-3: All the headlines after the game are with the switch in the system, Depor dropped the figure of the playmaker and the team felt better, because the three centre midfielders had more mobility with and without the ball, and later Cartabia found a lot of empty space as the rival’s defence was leaving big lagoons. The result was to see a Depor that was fluid in attack, just the kind of game in which the Galicians are deadly. It’s about to see I this scheme would work against a rival that closes all the lines in defence.

3- Cartabia: Without doubt the best game of Fede Cartabia on this season. This time the Argentine playmaker performed more as a left winger, he felt very comfortable and in only 79 minutes he completed 7 shots, scored a great free-kick goal and made 4 key passes. This is the Cartabia that the fans wanted to see, now it’s a matter to see if he can keep the pace.

4- The return of Diego Caballo: In recent games it seemed that Natxo González had finally decided to play with Saúl on the left ide of the defence, but in this game it was demonstrated that the competence for the position reman on. Caballo played as a starter for the first time in 2019 and he had a great game, the Valencian defender didn’t have problems in defence and was constantly joining the attacks completing 5 crosses and 3 key passes, one of them was the assist for the second goal.

5- A free-kick goal almost two years later: Cartabia scored the first goal in the game thanks to a well-executed free-kick at the beginning of the meeting. This is the first free-kick goal scored by Depor in almost two years, the previous one was scored by Kakuta at Primera División during the 4-2 defeat visiting Sevilla CF (April 08, 2017).
