REVIEW: SPORTING 1 – DEPORTIVO 2 (LIGA)

28 Jan 2019
Big victory for Deportivo, the Galicians took advantage of the rain of errors at the start of the game and later held the advantage in the second part.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González continued with a 4-3-3 draw; he also allowed the appearance of Christian Santos in attack. It was the third appearance for the Venezuelan striker and also the third as a starter (Elche CF and UD Almeria).

Dani Giménez was the goalkeeper, David Simón covered the right ide in defence, Diego Caballo played on the left, the central positions were for Pablo Mari and Domingos Duarte. Edu Expósito, Vicente Gómez and Álex Bergantiños were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia played attached to the right wing, Borja Valle attacked from the left flank and the centre forward was Santos.

At Sporting Gijón, coach José Alberto López played with a 4-3-3 system. Finnish attacker Robin Lod was left on the bench, so Portuguese midfielder André Sousa was a starter. Carlos Carmona and Uroš Đurđević were the references in attack.

FIRST HALF
High pace in the first part, the game was entertaining as both sides were trying to attack and, at the same time both teams left cracks at the back and also had mismatches with the passes, the result was to witness three goals in only fifteen minutes.

The game started with a high pace and with a goal from Depor. It was a corner-kick by Cartabia that Borja Valle headed first to see later Álex Bergantiños pushing the ball in from close range. But the advantage didn’t last too much as the locals found an early equalizer.

It was a big distraction of the defence, a secondary play after a corner-kick  ended with a cross of Hernán Santana that was searching for Đurđević, Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari were marking him, and somehow the Serbian attacker managed to push the ball in past Dani Giménez.

And Depor got the advantage back, and now the error was made by Sporting’s defence. Peybernes was trying to pass the ball at the right side of the defence, his pass was intercepted by Borja Valle, who ran into he edge of the area and combined with Cartabia, then the pass made by the Argentine was collected by Christian Santos, who scored with a strong shot from the left side of the area.

The game was open as the defensive lines were not only committing errors, but also leaving plenty of space. At minute 30, Christian Santos could have scored the third after collecting a cross from David Simón, but his shot just passed close to the far post.

Depor had the game controlled as it was having the ball, the problem was that later Vicente Gómez and Domingos Duarte were failing too much and it allowed Sporting to have dangerous counterattacks. At minute 34, in one of these actions, Álvaro Jiménez released a shot that was blocked by Dani Giménez

The final ten minutes were calmer, Deportivo were locked at their side of the pitch and Sporting tried to push, but they lacked ideas. Their only chance in this frame was an attempt of Babin that went over the crossbar (28’)

SECOND HALF
Deportivo had big problems at the start of the half, because the mismatches with the passes continued, but later the visiting side froze the game as the locals lost stamina and patience. The entry of Didier Moreno helped to increase the control of the game.

Sporting had a good start in the second part, Depor continued to have problems for losing the ball at midfield. At minute 51, Álex Bergantiños lost the ball in defence and the action ended in a counterattack and with Cristian Salvador dribbling Pablo Mari and later missing the target with a crossed shot.

Depor were having with problems to attack, but it did it from time to time, mainly led by Borja Valle, one of the best players for Depor thanks to his incursions on the left. In one of those actions, Christian Santos headed the ball on target and local goalie Diego Mariñomade the save (57’).

Edu Expósito was having issues and was replaced by Didier Moreno. The Colombian midfielder had a solid game, he helped to regain control of midfield with his passes and more passive attitude, just the pause that the Galicians needed.

At minute 61, a corner-kick of Canella was headed by Cristian Salvador and the ball hit Didier Moreno almost at the goal line. The last substitution for Depor was the entry of Quique González for Christian Santos.

Things were calmer for the final fifteen minutes, Sporting lost the explosion of the previous minutes and Depor spent the time having the ball at midfield and attempting counterattacks that lacked aim. The last opportunity for Sporting was a cross that Dani Giménez cleared poorly, substitute Álvaro Traver found the ball inside the area and his shot was blocked by Depor’s goalie (84’).

AFTER THE GAME
Not the best away game for Deportivo, the Galicians had important mismatches in defence and with the passes, but the punch of the first minutes was enough to secure the first away win in almost four months. Great game by Álex Bergantiños, Borja Valle and Didier Moreno.

The victory allows Depor to stay third at the standings, now only one point behind Málaga CF and two under Granada CF as these clubs could only draw during the matchday. The nest game is the visit of CD Tenerife to the Riazor (Saturday, 20h30 CET). The bad news is that Vicente Gómez and Carlos Fernández are suspended after picking the fifth yellow card of the season, the later also suffered an injury. Cartabia and Edu Expósito also ended with knocks.
