PREVIEW: GRANADA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

10 Feb 2019
Big game in the fight for direct promotion. Deportivo are switching the system once again due to injury problems, while Granada CF want to recover the form of the first round.

Referee: Valentín Pizarro Gómez
Kick-off: 18h00 CET (Nuevo Los Cármenes)

STATISTICS:  70 YEARS WITHOUT WINNING IN GRANADA
During the Segunda season 1947/18, Depor conquered a 1-3 victory visiting Granada CF, since then 70 years have passed and Deportivo have been unable to win in the next 16 visits to the old and the new Los Cármenes stadium (7 draws and 9 defeats).

Also, the Andalusians have only lost once at home during this season: 1-2 Vs. Sporting Gijón back in November. They are the third best home team in the league with 28 points added in 13 home meetings, mark only below CA Osasuna (35) and RCD Mallorca (29).

Meanwhile, Deportivo arrive to Los Cármenes after breaking the long spell of not been able to win on the road. The Galicians are currently the fourth best visiting team in the league with 18 points added in 13 visits, mark only below Albacete Balompié (21), Granada CF (19) and Málaga CF (19).

This is also a confrontation between the two best defensive lines in the league, Granada CF have only allowed 16 goals, while Deportivo only conceded 18. In the offensive department, the Galicians are the best with 35 goals added to their tally, while the Andalusians have netted 30 goals, the sixth best mark in the league.

DEPORTIVO: NEW SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM
Coach Natxo González established since his arrival the 4-3-1-2 as the standard draw, but in 2019 he already used two other playing systems, and now he is about to use a new one: the 4-2-3-1. The injuries are pushing him to make this new modification after a successful implementation of the 4-3-3.

The 4-3-3 left a positive impression, but the injury problems affecting the offensive midfielders are provoking a new switch. Throughout the week the coach also tested a 4-1-4-1 figure, but the 4-2-3-1 is what prevailed in the last two trainings. Edu Expósito will be the playmaker. Quique González is returning to the starting eleven, also Pedro Mosquera, who hasn’t played any minute in 2019.

Team news: Fede Cartabia is fit to play and will be a starter.  Saúl García is returning after surpassing a hamstring injury. Vicente Gómez, Carlos Fernández, Krohn-Dehli and Pedro Sánchez are the men staying at the injury room, while Sebastián Dubarbier and Iñigo López are out for tactical reasons.

Man to watch: Midfielder Edu Expósito. One of the most regular players on the season and one of the two offensive midfielders that remain healthy. He will now perform as a playmaker, a role that he didn’t even have at Fabril. Now he will have a big responsibility playing at the stadium of not only a direct rival, but also the best defence in the league.

Picked players: (18) Dani Giménez, Adrián Ortolá (goalkeepers); Eneko Bóveda, David Simón, Domingos Duarte, Pablo Mari, Michele Somma, Diego Caballo, Saúl García (defenders); Edu Expósito, Pedro Mosquera, Álex Bergantiños, Didier Moreno, Fede Cartabia (midfielders); Nahuel Leiva, Quique González, Christian Santos & Borja Valle (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Dani Giménez – David Simón, Domingos Duarte, Pablo Mari, Caballo – Álex Bergantiños, Pedro Mosquera – Cartabia, Edu Expósito, Borja Valle - Quique González.

GRANADA: LAST PUSH
Granada CF represent the club that has spent more time as the leader of Segunda División on this season, actually their defeat at CA Osasuna, plus the expulsion of FC Reus and the redistribution of points of its games, have pulled them to the second position after two months at the top.

But it will be useless if the team isn’t able to extend the good form of the first round. And it’s that the team has started to show some exhaustion in December and January, because they were unable to defeat direct rivals like Cádiz CF and CA Osasuna. Now the hope is that, after the game with Depor, they face teams at the bottom that can help them to raise the level (Córdoba CF and Rayo Majadahonda).

Team news: Coach Diego Martínez gave options to count with Ángel Montoro, who has been out with a shoulder injury. A final decision will be made on Sunday, but it isn’t expected that he will be available. Left-back Álex Martínez (Achilles) and playmaker Fran Rico (knee ligaments) are also out. New signing Ramón Azeez could be making his debut after been signed on last week.

Man to watch: Winger Álvaro Vadillo. The only outfield player at the team that has taken part as a starter of the 24 games on the Segunda season. He has scored 3 goals and his 6 assists represent the second-best mark on the league. The Cádiz-born man is the most vertical player at the team and menace to watch by Deportivo.

Picked players: Roster to be released on Sunday

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Rui Silva – Víctor Díaz, Germán Sánchez, José Martínez, Quini – San Emeterio, Nico Aguirre – Puertas, Fede Vico, Vadillo – Adrián Ramos
