THINKING OF GIMNÁSTIC

15 Feb 2019
Injury problems for Natxo González and he could need a Fabril’s player to complete a roster of 18 men for the game. Relegation-troubled Gimnástic Tarragona made a total shift in the winter window and practically changed the entire squad.

Deportivo are coming from a refreshing victory in Granada CF that’s leaving the team in a good position towards the direct promotion, now it faces a home meeting against Gimnástic Tarragona, a club with a particular situation after the winter window (Riazor, Saturday, 16h00 CET).

But things aren’t calm for coach Natxo González due to the injuries. On Wednesday, the club reported that Pedro Mosquera had suffered a grade I muscle injury on his left thigh, reason why he is out of this game. It just increases the problems at midfield as Michael Krohn-Dehli (Achilles) and Vicente Gómez (foot sprain) are also out.

So, the coach only has three centre midfielders available for the game: Edu Expósito, Álex Bergantiños and Didier Moreno. If Natxo wants to repeat the 4-1-4-1 figure of the weekend, then Didier Moreno would be the one replacing Mosquera.

And there are more problems. Striker Carlos Fernández (hamstring) is already training on the pitch, but won’t be available until next week, while centre-back Domingos Duarte and winger Nahuel Leiva are suspended, the latter is out of two games after the competition committee rejected the appeal of the club.

Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez has been struggling in 2019 due to a muscle problem, it was expected that he was going to join the group on this week, but he has been training apart and it doesn’t seem probable that he could be ready for Saturday. If the playmaker isn’t fit then the coach will need a player from the academy in order to have 18 players available. For this reason, Fabril’s Víctor García, Javi Cobo, Arturo Segado and Jonathan Montiel trained with the team at the end of the week.

At Gimnástic Tarragona, the team is only penultimate because la liga already ruled out FC Reus from the competition. The Catalans are only six points above safety, but it’s hard to aspire to salvation when the team has lost 9 of the last 13 games. Things are so desperate that the club made a huge shift in the winter window hiring 10 players and releasing or transferring 11 men. So, the club lived a summer transfer window situation at the middle of the tournament.

Coach Enrique Martín, who arrived on matchday 11, found himself with a new team at the middle of the season and, taking advantage that Nástic weren’t playing on last weekend (they had to play against FC Reus), they decided to make a mini concentration in Valencia. The stage lasted three days and the coach tried to hurry up the integration of a team that’s running out of time.

The coach is having four casualties for the game: Right-back Iván López, centre midfielder Vítor Martínez ‘Viti’ (both knee), centre-back Mohammed Djetei and centre midfielder Ramiro Guerra (both thigh). Also, winger Sebastià Coris (lumbago), left-back Abraham Minero (thigh) and striker Ikechukwu Uche (ankle) are doubtful for the game.  Right-back Josema Fernández and striker José Kanté are available for the trip to the Riazor and could be making their debut after been signed on deadline day.
