MATCHDAY 26: FEW GOALS

20 Feb 2019
The lowest number of goals on the season and the narrow difference both at the top and the bottom of the standings continue.

The last Segunda matchdays have been characterized by the lack of goals, and matchday 26 saw the lowest number of goals o the season: 18. A number of goals also saw in two previous matchdays: 16 & 21, though in both the number of matches was 11 as FC Reus were still competing.

The tendency at the top continue as the top five clubs remain in a short distance (2 points). Leaders Albacete Balompié managed to add a point visiting Real Zaragoza (0-0), and the big winners were Málaga CF, side that returned to direct promotion thanks to a 0-1 win at Rayo Majadahonda.

CA Osasuna and Deportivo lost a spot at the standings as they could only draw. The Navarrans were about to lose, but a goal in added time scored by Roberto Torres gave them a point visiting CD Numancia (1-1). They have chained six straight games without losing, same mark than a Deportivo that was surprised at home by Gimnástic Tarragona (1-1).

Granada CF were trailing, but managed to score twice at Córdoba CF (1-2), the Andalusians remain fifth. The promotion zone is closed with a Real Oviedo that defeated a direct rival: AD Alcorcón (1-0). The Madrilenians have now lost four of their last six games.

The side that’s reacting is Cádiz CF, they remain in the fight for promotion after a 2-0 win over CD Tenerife, it’s their second straight victory. RCD Mallorca is also there after a 3-0 win over CD Lugo. It’s the second victory in three games for the Majorcans.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Albacete 49 36 21

5 Granada 47 32 18
6 Oviedo 42 31 30
7 Cádiz 41 34 21

No changes in the fight to avoid demotion. The major novelty is that Extremadura UD lost visiting Elche CF (2-0) and the result cost the job to coach Antonio Rodríguez 'Rodri'. They have remained winless within the last six games. The matchday was closed with the 1-0 win of UD Las Palmas hosting Sporting Gijón, two sides that remain in nowhere’s land.
